Sin duda, la musica parece alejarnos de todos los males, aunque haya quien se ponga malo con Pitingo o El Sueño de Morfeo. Today we are talking to a Tony Award-winning performer known around the world for her iconic original performance as Eponine in both the West End and Broadway editions of international stage sensation LES MISERABLES, copiously convivial chanteuse Frances Ruffelle. The October broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week — the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin — begin with two programs featuring The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman. In the first, Lorin Maazel leads Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1, with Mr. Bronfman as soloist, and Sibelius's Symphony No. 2. The following week Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts Ravel's Alborada del gracioso; Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, again with Mr. Bronfman as soloist. Today in 1989, the first Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd opened at the Circle inthe Square Theatre, where it ran for 188 performances. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and libretto by Hugh Wheeler. Set in 19th century England, the musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years' transportation on trumped-up charges. When he finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who transported him, he vows revenge on the judge and, later, the whole world. He teams up with a piemaker, Mrs. Lovett, and opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers and has them baked into pies. (more...)

TheatreWorks, the nationally-acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, presents a night full of magical fun with its 11th annual Anything Goes -taking place for the first time this year at the luxurious Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club. For this unique fundraiser, guests are invited to visit TheatreWorks' massive costume shop in the weeks prior to the event, where they are able to choose their party attire from the hundreds of costumes used in TheatreWorks' past productions. In previous years, guests have been attired as everything from go-go dancers to the Pope, Cinderella's prince to Samurai warriors, and from Sweeney Todd to Lady Bracknell. This year's festivities will be conducted by the Master of Ceremonies, Golden Globe Award-winner and three-time Emmy-nominee Bill Grundfest. Attendees will enjoy a cocktail hour, followed by a sumptuous dinner, dessert dash, and live auction, then will dance the night away against the sweeping views of the Palo Alto Hills. WICKED Announces Lottery for Orpheum Theatre Run, 9/18-10/27

The Wicked touring company and Hennepin Theatre Trust are pleased to announce that a day-of-performance lottery for alimited number of orchestra seats will be held prior to each performance of Wicked during the Minneapolis run, September 18-October 27. Two and one-half hours before each show, people who present themselves at the Orpheum Theatre Box Office (910 Hennepin Avenue) will have their names placed in a lottery container. Thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This offer is available only in-person at the Orpheum Box Office, with a limit of two tickets per person. Beginning with the 2013-14 season, the New York Philharmonic's Insights Series - in which artists and experts will explore some of the season's themes and concerts - will now be free, and take place at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. This season's events will include discussions with Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow during his farewell season (October 23); composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Leila Josefowicz (October 28), who will discuss Mr. Salonen's Violin Concerto, written for Ms. Josefowicz (which they will perform with the Philharmonic in its New York Concert Premiere, October 30-November 5); Music Director Alan Gilbert and Executive Director Matthew VanBesien on the state of the Philharmonic (March 3, 2014); The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman (May 20, 2014), who will talk about Beethoven's piano concertos (which he will perform during The Beethoven Piano Concertos: A Philharmonic Festival, June 11-28, 2014); and discussions relating to the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, the details of which will be announced at a later date.
