After a month's hiatus, the Flat Rock Playhouse Music on the Rock Series returns celebrating two of the most influential artists in the history of American Popular Music, Johnny Cash & Roy Orbison.
In 1937, long before Flat Rock Playhouse began its history "on the Rock" in the Village of Flat Rock, a man by the name of Robroy Farquhar led a group of struggling performers around the country, until together, they settled in the Blue Ridge region of Western North Carolina.
The Playhouse is returning to the 'rock' of Music on the Rock with their next tribute performance featuring the folk-rock music of Simon & Garfunkel.

The Playhouse has kicked off its 2017 season with a month of music celebrating genres ranging from rock to country, and everything in between. Continuing with this music marathon, The Music of the Rat Pack, a Music on the Rock special featuring timeless music from the golden age of American standards, will run from March 9th through the 19th at The Flat Rock Playhouse Downtown on Main Street in Hendersonville.

The Takoma Ensemble, a classical string orchestra, will offer a concert exploring the theme of immigration Saturday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 633 Sligo Ave., Silver Spring. The concert, co-sponsored by CASA, is entitled The Golden Door: Music Without Borders, and will be led by Artistic Director and Conductor Victoria Gau. The concert will feature several works by American immigrants, beginning with a solo performance by Billboard winner Lilo Gonzalez. Other selections include Divertimento for Strings by Bela Bartok, Hungarian immigrant to the United States, and the world premiere of Beside the Golden Door, by Kim and Kathryn Kluge (Kim is the son of immigrants). The concert will include Within Her Arms, composed by Grammy nominee Anna Clyne, and Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, written by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, the most famous South American composer of all time. Spanish commentary will be provided by Lindolfo Carballo, of CASA, and English commentary will be provided by Gau, and the performance will be followed by a Q&A and reception. Tickets are $10-$25 (kids 16 and under are free) and are available at takomaensemble.org. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to CASA. More information is available at 240-463-3695.

In the 1940's, women managed factories while welding to build warships and also sat in a bomber's cockpit, climbing into the air to aid America's war efforts. Produced by Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW), the World War II story titled Censored on Final Approach and written by a former Marquette University Director of Theater, the late Phylis Ravel, takes flight on stage in the Studio Theater to reveal how these women coped. RTW collaborated with current theater students and technicians to remember these women pilots who sacrificed their lives for the war. To do this, these courageous WASPS (Women Air Force Service Pilots), females ahead of their time, confronted their male competition and tradition to fight for their right to fly and live everything their feminine selves could be.
