by Pat Cerasaro - Nov 18, 2011

Modern-day master of musical theatre Stephen Sondheim is about to release the second book of his complete collected lyrics - covering mostly everything written in the last three decades and in this one so far - titled after a line from what may very well be his ultimate masterpiece, the Pulitzer Prize-winning SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE - LOOK, I MADE A HAT; Collected Lyrics (1981-2011) with Attendant Comments, Amplifications, Dogmas, Harangues, Digressions, Anecdotes and Miscellany. So, today, we are going to be taking a look at a litany of the finest moments from Sondheim's post-SWEENEY TODD musicals that are highlighted in LOOK, I MADE A HAT and perhaps discover a few of the many reasons why Sondheim's musicals - whether late-period or early on- are the best of the best Broadway has to offer - now or ever. And, what an absolutely mind-blowing list it is - and what a masterpiece of a book!

by Pat Cerasaro - Aug 18, 2011

Just in time for this week's international movie theater broadcast of the simply must-see Shakespeare's Globe Film Series production of HENRY IV: Part 2 on August 18, Vice President of NCM Fathom, Dan Diamond, was kind enough discuss with me the role his company plays in bringing major entertainment events to movie screens around the world - such as Shakespeare‘s Globe Film Series, Stephen Sondheim's COMPANY: IN CONCERT, the Tony-winning Best Musical MEMPHIS, the 25th Anniversary concert presentation of LES MISEABLES, Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, ballet, sports events like last year's WIMBELDON in 3D, as well as the August 31 re-release of the new HD print of Brian DePalma's SCARFACE - plus, most importantly, what the eminently exciting future holds for Fathom. Additionally, we touch on upcoming innovations coming to a movie theater near you courtesy of Fathom, such as 4D and lensless 3D technologies and the possibility they hold for capturing live theatre on film, as well as the ever-expanding company's goals for improving the local arts scene in communities large and small, world-wide. In the age of GLEE bringing theatre to a larger audience than ever before, the time is surely right for feature film presentations in the cinema of the best of Broadway and live performance - as well the plans to present all 37 of Shakespeare's plays - and Diamond's commitment and passion for his work comes through in this expansive conversation touching on virtually every aspect of what makes Fathom so fascinating and a formative, necessary element in the foundering and sustaining of a local and national arts scene connected by a network of movie theaters. If all that were not enough, Diamond also clues us in on some future showings such as the new Ozzy Osbourne documentary by his son, Jack, the upcoming Floyd Mayweather boxing match and, just maybe, the upcoming 25th Anniversary production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA slated for October.

by Alexandra Strycula - Jun 17, 2011

The second show in the Pittsburgh CLO's milestone 65th season this June, following its recent presentation of 9 TO 5, is the musical version of JEKYLL & HYDE. Conceived for the stage by Steve Cuden and Frank Wildhorn, JEKYLL & HYDE is a take on the classic Robin Lewis Stevenson novella 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' and delves deeply into a case study-like exploration of the 'primitive duality' of man. The CLO production boasts Kevin Gray as the title character, as well as a talented supporting cast composed of Tim Hartman (A TALE OF TWO CITIES, FINIAN'S RAINBOW), Brynn O'Malley (SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, the Pittsburgh CLO's 2009 production of INTO THE WOODS), Elizabeth Stanley (MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, CRY-BABY), and George Dvorsky (THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, PASSION).

Riverside Symphony Presents GOLDKIND, 6/10
by BWW News Desk - Jun 10, 2011

New York's 'intrepid' Riverside Symphony will celebrate its 30th-anniversary season at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, on Friday June 10, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. with the world premiere of Goldkind, by Anthony Korf, the orchestra's founding Artistic Director and Composer-in-Residence, and Sabina Sciubba, international pop diva/songwriter, best known for her years as frontwoman for the New York cult-band Brazilian Girls. The new work is based on an original fairytale co-penned by Sciubba and Korf. Singing and narrating, Sciubba, a riveting presence, will join Music Director and Conductor George Rothman and his Riverside Symphony musicians in this trailblazing work, a 21st-century tribute to Prokofiev's timeless Peter and the Wolf, engaging young audiences and mature listeners alike. The collaboration in part stems from the catholic musical interests of Goldkind's creators: Korf, with his lifelong passion for jazz and pop, and Sciubba, who has closely followed classical music since her early training. Korf characterizes the collaborative experience as '...daunting but inspiring, thanks to Sabina's intuitive depth and brilliance as a performer' and also speaks of his challenge to '...incorporate with integrity' while reaching the broadest possible audience. Sciubba offers that 'writing with Anthony Korf was poetically, musically, and humanly very instructive.' She also reveals: 'Goldkind is very much inspired by my childhood, although distorted, of course, for dramatic value. I added some bizarre elements to it, which wouldn't seem credible in an autobiography.'
