UNDO Project Space

With Say Something Bunny!, Alison S. M. Kobayashi and UnionDocs present an enthralling performance based on an amateur audio recording made over sixty years ago. The origin of this audio was a mystery. Two spools of thin steel wire were found tucked inside an obsolete sound device purchased by a collector at an estate sale. There were no labels; no dates, no names, and no context. Through her obsessive research and active imagination along with hundreds of times listening through, Kobayashi decodes the rich dialogue in the recording and discovers the detailed history of an unforgettable Jewish family from New York that bursts with humor, surprise and drama. The one-woman show annotates, illustrates, and reconstructs the scenes of the recording, while revealing the stranger-than-fiction biography of the eldest son, David, who made the wire recordings. Using video, installation, performance and plentiful archival material, Kobayashi leads the audience through a close listening, spinning "a multigenerational yarn of Rothian heights."

BWW Recap: Phil Takes The Dunphys to Awesomeland on MODERN FAMILY
by Matt Smith - Oct 30, 2014

It's the annual Halloween episode, and given MODERN FAMILY's previous Day of the Dead-themed outings, I've got high hopes for this one. Holiday episodes in general can go either way — because you've got a broad holiday that everyone can relate to, but then you have to tailor it to that specific show and those characters. Again, MODERN FAMILY has some pretty good outings, but with the holiday repeatedly coming every year, the decision to do a Halloween episode every season means continually having to work with this same formula — except that they then can't do what they did the previous year, but of course, are still working around the same holiday.

BWW Recap: Alex Goes to College on This Week's MODERN FAMILY
by Matt Smith - Oct 2, 2014

We open with Cam, Mitch & Lily taking a new photo for above their mantle (“She's not in the one up there now and we started to get the slight impression it was bothering her,” quips Cam before cutting to one of the less humorous gags). Not the most active of a storyline, but I'm glad they're addressing they might need to change the picture; after five seasons, it's nice that the writers acknowledge the same need for change for the characters that the viewing audience is more or less expecting at this point anyway. But no, the focus of the storyline does not seem to be on the actual taking of the photo, but rather on the unique, to put it nicely, smile Lily gives while she's taking it. Again, it seems like the Chucky-esque smile might be a bit of a bland storyline, but at least it gives Lily something to do. :-) Gosh, can that kid turn out some great one-liners!

BWW Reviews: The New Jewish Theatre's Hilarious Production of OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES
by Chris Gibson - May 15, 2014

It's impossible to analyze humor, and even if you try to it just takes all the fun out of it anyway. Some say jokes are mostly 'tragedy plus time', and that 'laughter is the best medicine'. Both are true to a certain extent. So, when it comes to reviewing OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES (created by Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent), I think any kind of critical analysis would be a boring waste of time. And, in a time when show titles can sometimes be cryptic metaphors, it's nice to see something so simple and direct as one that succinctly and accurately sums up the premise of this show. The current production by The New Jewish Theatre is a well-cast, smartly directed show that delivers hearty laughs from start to finish. Everyone could use a good chuckle now and then, so I strongly suggest you check out this hilarious show!

BWW Reviews: Gilda Radner Lives in BUNNY BUNNY at the Falcon
by Don Grigware - Feb 11, 2014

Comedienne Gilda Radner became one of the most idolized comic figures of the 70s as well as a popular tragic heroine of the 80s as she lost her battle with Ovarian cancer. Possessing an edgy brilliance that defied description, she lived passionately for every moment and won the hearts of millions. Writer Alan Zweibel, who was one of Gilda's closest friends - he created Roseanne Roseannadanna - from the beginning of her professional career to her death in 1989, penned Bunny Bunny to keep Gilda's memory alive...how lucky for us as we witness a triple threat production now onstage at the Falcon Theatre: great writing, vibrant direction from Dimitri Toscas and superb acting by a trio of artists who evoke and maintain a visceral energy that is every bit as remarkable and palpable as Gilda herself (Erin Pineda).

This hilarious musical version of the beloved Caldecott Honor book by Mo Willems (author of the Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus book series) is sure to get the family giggling, but also learning about communication, family responsibility and love.

BWW Reviews: What Happens in Camelot, Stays in Camelot; Rivertown Theaters Presents SPAMALOT
by Heidi Scheuermann - Jun 20, 2013

I remember going to plays at the children's theater in Rivertown when I was a very little girl. I even had a birthday party there once. I was so excited when I finally got to go to the 'big people' theatre with my grandmother. She took me to see YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, and that is something I have never forgotten. I returned to Rivertown Theaters recently to see their production of Monty Python's SPAMALOT.

BWW Interviews: Marty Regan and Kenny Fries Talk HGO's THE MEMORY STONE
by David Clarke - Apr 4, 2013

Shortly after many children all over Houston had hunted lawns for eggs and other treats that the mythical Easter Bunny delivered this past Sunday, I had a delightful conversation with composer Marty Regan and librettist Kenny Fries for Houston Grand Opera (HGO)'s 50th World Premiere, THE MEMORY STONE. We discussed the new opera, looking into its creation, meaning, and cultural significance. As we talked about THE MEMORY STONE, it became abundantly clear that this particular opera is most deserving of being HGO's magical 50th World Premiere and that it will be one that audiences should not miss.
