The Civilians take their singular brand of creative investigation in a bold new direction with Be the Death of Me, an installation performance piece that offers the audience intimate encounters with matters of life and death in New York City. The show runs for 2 performances only at the Irondale Center (85 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn) on Friday, June 28th and Saturday, June 29th at 8:00 pm.
In this groundbreaking, daring event, the audience will navigate their experience inside the atmospheric Irondale Center, housed in a historic church in Fort Greene Brooklyn. Through a dynamic variety of settings and formats, the audience encounters real stories gathered from a wide cross-section of New Yorker, everyone from ER nurses to priests, funeral directors to vampires, shamans to crime-scene cleaners. Through this myriad of perspectives, Be the Death of Me uncovers hidden worlds inside New York, places inhabited by those that witness the demise of the human body as well as those that imagine what may or may not happen to our souls on the other side of life.
Be the Death of Me draws on months of interviews conducted by The Civilians artistic team.

Death? Afterworld? Android lovers dying in the streets bleeding green blood? Homeless girls? Dogs stranded here from other planets? What are Sonny & The Sunsets getting at on Antenna to the Afterworld, a fastmoving record of new wave synths and post punk beats? The murder of a close friend of the band led Smith to think a lot about death and life after death. Shortly after, a visit to a psychic/medium brought Smith into contact with another friend who had died. This encounter with the afterworld inspired many of the lyrics on Sonny & the Sunsets' new record. And what a strangely entertaining odyssey it turned out to be. The record closes with 'Green Blood,' a quasi-spoken word track that uses male/female call and response vocals to tell the tale of Sonny's affair with a spaceling. Click below for a first listen!

Thelma Battle-Buckner has chronicled a rich and arresting family history in her forthcoming literary offering, 'The Battle of a Daytime Nightmare,' which is due out April 26, 2013, the author's 81st birthday. She stitches together, brilliantly, a dazzling tapestry of her family's will to overcome whatever obstacles life's circumstance placed before it. The Battle of a Daytime Nightmare is a breathtaking account of Dr. Buckner and her family's journey from 1830 'til now-with a surprising connection to one of today's corporate giants. Her narrative exemplifies unity. It is rife with pleasant and stormy unpleasant surprises. It is penned in the plain and poetic speech, style and spirit of her culture. In some ways, the Battle-Buckner story amounts to a sharply focused snapshot of the travails of Black America, of "Making way out of no way." The substance of her life flows broad and low like a good Sunday morning sermon; it speaks of work, ties, struggle, joys, victory, religion, music and undying love, not only for her family, but for humans at large.
