Based on the novela The Love of Seven Dolls by Paul Gallico and the film adaptation by Helen Deutsch
On April 21, 1961, Broadway audiences and critics fellhead-over-heels in love with the new musical Carnival. Produced by David Merrick and adapted from the MGM film Lili by Michael Stewart (from thescreenplay by Helen Deutsch, itself adapted from a Paul Gallico short storyentitled The Man Who Hated People), theshow was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and had a tuneful andmemorable score by Bob Merrill. The critics raved - in the Daily News, John Chapman wrote that Carnival was 'enchantment from the moment the houselights godown.' And so it was, pureenchantment, despite its darker elements - it ran on Broadway for 719 performances, and had a best-selling original cast recording (which debuted atnumber one on the Billboard chart) and 'Love Makes The World Go Round' became amuch-sung song, covered by many of the popular singers of the time. Carnival was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning two(one for Alberghetti - in a tie with Diahann Carroll - and one for Will StevenArmstrong's scenic design). The show had a successful national tour, as well.

This winter, Diana Amsterdam's Carnival Round the Central Figure brings the macabre back to New York City.
The central figure of Diana Amsterdam's tragedy of manners is a young, terminally ill accountant named Paul (Ted Caine) who spends most of the evening silently lying in a hospital bed surrounded by a carnival of denial. Unable to communicate, it's unclear how much of his wife, Sheila's (Christine Rowan), mask of perkiness he must endure as she forces positive energy into the room with plans for their future and uses an annoyingly motherly tone to praise the fact that he ate a whole half a banana today and kept it all down.

This winter, Diana Amsterdam's Carnival Round the Central Figure brings the macabre back to New York City. In a staging by Karen Kohlhaas reminiscent of the carnal exorbitance of carnivale's heyday, featuring a cast of characters pulled straight from the murky depths of the human psyche. Carnival is a hilarious, bizarre, and poignant story of the meaning of death, of dying with dignity, and the ancient dilemma of living for a life after death. Presented by IRT Theater (Kori Rushton, Artistic Director).

The three biggest nights are Sunday, Monday and Saturday(20th)with the the Samba Schools parade , with a cast of 40.000 performers. These performances ares considered the greatest open air musical shows in the whole world. Each one of the Samba Schools presents a plot through music, dance, costumes and floats.
Modern Brazilian Carnival originated in Rio de Janeiro in 1640, when the city's bourgeoisie imported the practice of holding balls and masquerade parties from Paris. Later, a rhythm called SAMBA was developed by African descendents and the Samba Schools were created, absorbing elements derived from Native Brazilians and African cultures.
Samba schools are very large groups of performers, who work year round in preparation for the Carnival. Samba Schools perform in the Sambodromo,an open air theatre created only for this purpose. The Sambodromo is located close to the city center. In the city of Rio, the parades start on 20:00 or 21:00 (depending on the date) and ends around 5:00 in the morning. The Rio de Janeiro subway, operates 24 hours during the main parade days.
Samba Schools take part of an official competition, divided into twelve groups, in which a single school is declared the winner, according to costume, flow, theme, and band music quality and performance.
But the Carnival is comemorated not only in Rio:
rhythm, participation, and costumes vary from one region of Brazil to another. São Paulo, has a parade led by Samba Schools, too. Minor groups (called 'blocos') allowing public participation can be found in Rio, São Paulo as well as in other cities. The northeastern cities of Salvador, Porto Seguro and Recife have organized groups parading through streets and the people interacts directly with them. Crowds follow the 'trio elétricos' floats through the city streets. Also in northeast, Olinda carnival features unique characteristics, part influenced by Venice Carnival mixed with cultural despections of local folklore.
