Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) plays Berenger in Eugene Ionesco's The Killer in a production that also features Kristine Nielsen, Paul Sparks and Robert Stanton. The Killer is newly translated by Michael Feingold and is directed by Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder).

Washington National Opera (WNO) celebrates its sixth season of free opera simulcasts at Nationals Park with title sponsor Mars, Incorporated for the M&M'S® Opera in the Outfield performance of Mozart's beloved classic The Magic Flute on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Sung in English and featuring a colorful kaleidoscope of sets and costumes by Japanese- American artist Jun Kaneko, The Magic Flute is a perfect opera for the entire family. Bernard Haitink will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct two weeks of performances highlighting works by Austrian composers - Berg, Webern, and Mahler - and Beethoven, who spent much of his career in Austria. The New York Philharmonic will present its 11th season of Summertime Classics, July 2-6, 2014, featuring five themed concerts with Bramwell Tovey, who has been the host and conductor of the series since its founding in 2004. On the first program, July 2-3, 2014, titled "Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Friends," the New York Philharmonic will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture; Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1, with pianist Joyce Yang as soloist; Musorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain; Rachmaninoff's arrangement of his own Vocalise; and Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Marche slave. The second program, July 4-6, 2014, titled "Star-Spangled Celebration," will feature the New York Philharmonic and United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps - "The Commandant's Own," which is celebrating its 80th-anniversary year - in a program that includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist, and Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" from Strike Up the Band; Sousa marches; and more. In these performances Major Brian Dix, director and commanding officer of "The Commandant's Own," will share conducting duties with Bramwell Tovey.

The San Francisco Symphony (SFS) continues its mission of providing broad access to music and music education with the release of a new version of its free online music education resource, SFSKids.org. The new SFSKids incorporates user-friendly educational game-play techniques to bring orchestral music to today's digitally savvy children, and launches a new generation of music instruction tools for parents and teachers. The new SFSKids was developed in creative partnership with University of California, Irvine's Institute for Software Research.
Liberty Hall Museum has announced it will host an additional Downton Abbey Luncheon on Saturday, February 8 (Noon - 3 p.m.), after January's event and a second Downton Abbey Luncheon scheduled for February 22 sold out in record time. 'We are excited that Downton Abbey is back on the air, but we never dreamed that so many of our guests would be as well,' said Bill Schroh, Jr., Director of Museum Operations. 'Our Downton Abbey trivia game during the January luncheon was one of the toughest I have ever seen. Every guest had their arm raised ready to answer every question. I hope the rest of the Luncheons are just as fun.'
The Tokyo Philharmonic has the longest history and tradition of any orchestra in Japan, having been originally established in Nagoya in 1911. As plans were being made for its centenary celebrations in 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck east Japan, challenging the nation with an unprecedented crisis. The orchestra's centenary plans were scuttled, as an entire culture adjusted to a solemn new reality.

'Fire. Water. Night' by Yara Arts Group adapts spring and summer rituals into a World Music Theater piece that moves throughout the lobby, risers and playing areas of La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre, reveling in the imagery of the spring thaw, of awakening forests and of midsummer fire rituals. The work, conceived and directed by Virlana Tkacz, interweaves performances in English and Ukrainian, including fragments of Lesya Ukrainka's verse drama, 'Forest Song,' poetry from Native American, Canadian and American authors, dance and song. It features a score by electronic music composer Alla Zagaykevych, traditional ritual songs from Ukraine and raucous dance music by Toronto's Lemon Bucket Orkestra. La Mama E.T.C. will present the work tonight, June 7 to 16. The experience is highly visual and musical and is completely accessible to all audiences.
Aaron Copland once characterized 'The Rite of Spring' as the foremost orchestral achievement of the 20th century, and The New York Times proclaimed the significance of the work to be 'to the 20th century as Beethoven's Ninth is to the 19th.' With the arrival of the centennial of Stravinsky's iconic masterwork, a reverberation of celebration can be heard around the symphonic world-and Pacific Symphony is no exception, offering a variety of activities throughout the rest of the 2012-13 season. In conceiving 'The Rite of Spring,' Stravinsky broke all the rules and defied convention, and it is very much in this spirit that the Symphony approaches its celebration.
