Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 season with the Opening Gala concert, headlined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, tonight, September 25, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Gilbert will conduct Mr. Ma and the Orchestra in two works by Argentinian composers: the World Premiere of Octavio Brunetti's arrangement, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, of a suite from Astor Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel, and Osvaldo Golijov's Azul, composed for the eminent cellist. The program opens with Ravel's Alborada del gracioso and closes with Bolero, two pieces that reflect the French composer's fascination with Spain. The concert will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center at a later date, and Classical 105.9 FM WQXR at 7:30 p.m.

The Minnesota Orchestra Board Negotiating Committee has offered three proposed dates to the Musicians' Union for negotiating sessions at the end of this month. The Orchestra also announced the cancellation of two final weeks in its classical subscription season through June 2, as well as the addition of three weeks of classical concerts in July at Ted Mann Concert Hall.

World-renowned pastry guru, Chef Alain Roby, will put the finishing touches on the "World's Longest Candy Cane" in an attempt to obtain his third Guinness World Record in beautiful downtown Geneva on Saturday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. The candy cane will stretch 45 ft., beginning at the Geneva Courthouse and stretching to the intersection in front of his All Chocolate Kitchen at 33 South Third Street. Residents, neighbors and friends are invited to join Mayor Kevin R. Burns and the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and watch Chef Roby as he pulls sugar down festive Third Street.
