Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra will open its 37th season with a compelling program of works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Stravinsky, including the latter's incandescent Firebird Suite (1919 version), at Santa Barbara's historic Lobero Theatre on October 3. Also featuring Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D Minor and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, the concert will begin at 7:30 pm. Subscription and single-ticket sales are underway.

The program includes works by Chick Corea, John Zorn, Toru Takemitsu, Bach, Ravel, and Stravinsky, as well as the world premiere of William T. McKinley's 22-movement Mostly Blues for Clarinet and Marimba. Joining the duo on stage are guest artists Eddie Gomez (bass), Adam Albert (clarinet), John Hamann (bass clarinetist), and Miki Orihara (principal dancer of the Martha Graham Dance Company).

The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago presents a preview showing of Osiris and Isis, a new evening-length story-ballet choreographed by Chicagoan Ron De Jesus and performed by his namesake company, Ron De Jesus Dance, inspired by the ancient Egyptian myth of Osiris, the god who was murdered by his brother, Seth, and resurrected by his loving wife, Isis. The preview is presented one night only in the Yelda Khorsabad Court of the Oriental Institute, 1155 E. 58th Street in Hyde Park, tonight, October 17 at 7 pm.

Music Director Alan Gilbert opens the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 season with the Opening Gala concert, headlined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, tonight, September 25, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Gilbert will conduct Mr. Ma and the Orchestra in two works by Argentinian composers: the World Premiere of Octavio Brunetti's arrangement, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, of a suite from Astor Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel, and Osvaldo Golijov's Azul, composed for the eminent cellist. The program opens with Ravel's Alborada del gracioso and closes with Bolero, two pieces that reflect the French composer's fascination with Spain. The concert will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center at a later date, and Classical 105.9 FM WQXR at 7:30 p.m.
