BWW Reviews: Hedda Lives! And She's More Dangerous Than Ever, in National Theatre of Norway's Modern Production
by Andrew White - Mar 5, 2013

The National Theatre of Norway's modern, pared-down 'Hedda Gabler' recently at the Kennedy Center, as part of the Nordic Cool festival, caught some local print critics off guard. There has been some grumbling about the lack of Victorian-era sociological context. This complaint assumes Hedda's problems belong to a bygone era, and have little to do with us--ridiculous. Moreover, audiences and artists alike don't deserve the cod-liver oil treatment. We don't expect jazz musicians to give us note-for-note renditions of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five recordings, no matter how great they were. So we should stop demanding that actors remain forever under the thumb of antiquated scripts whose dialect is so different from our own. We need to be able to breathe new life into the classics, experience Hedda as our contemporary, and this production does so brilliantly.

BWW Reviews: Jon Robin Baitz Creates a HEDDA for All the Ages at Hartford Stage
by Lauren Yarger - Sep 8, 2012

Times have changed, but Hedda's frustration still rings true in a contemporary society where political headlines about a "war on women" and protests that decisions on women's reproductive rights are made predominantly by men dominate today's headlines.

Casting Announced for Galleon Theatre Company's THE MAIAS, Opens March 8
by Lauren Wolman - Feb 6, 2011

José Maria Eça de Queirós (1845-1900), was the founding father of the Portuguese novel. He was a remarkable writer whom Émile Zola described as being ‘far greater than my own master, Flaubert.' He was a master of satire who sought to expose the hypocrisy of a provincial Lisbon society which slavishly paid homage to the cultural eminence of Paris and Romanticism. Eça's fiction is characterised by its barbed humour and lyrical descriptions but it is also tempered by a touching sympathy for humanity's foibles.
