Originally produced off-Broadway in 2006, Keith Bunin's complex THE BUSY WORLD IS HUSHED is now enjoying an excellent regional revival courtesy of Theatre Out, Orange County's Gay and Lesbian Theatre company, with performances playing through February 5 at the Empire Theatre in Santa Ana. Theatre Out's intimate setting, coupled with a trio of great performances from its cast, serve this intelligent, engaging drama quite well.

You wouldn't expect a 1937 Broadway musical that satirized American profiteering from wartime rumblings in Europe and was written to showcase the unique comedy talents of 'The Perfect Fool' Ed Wynn to be especially playable in the year 2008, but The Medicine Show, on their tiny stage way out west on W. 52nd Street, do a bang-up job with Hooray For What!
'Exciting' is not a word normally associated with productions of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. Heartwarming? Sure. Chilling? When its climax is done well, certainly. But director David Cromer's non-traditional take on the play - which remains completely faithful to the author's text and themes - is one of the most exciting theatre events of the season.

He has written more than ten plays, including 'American Sligo' and 'Red Light Winter'(nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2006); directed his first feature film, 'Winter Passing' in 2005; published several young adult novels and an adult novel, The Year of Endless Sorrows (2007); and received two Drama Desk nominations as a director for his production of 'Blackbird'. Now, in his first graphic novel, BALL PEEN HAMMER (First Second Books / October 1st, 2009 / $17.99 paperback original), Rapp explores civilization at its darkest hour in this new visual format.
