From its humble roots in a warehouse on Kinsley Street to its current national prominence as a Tony Award-winning theatre, Hartford Stage proclaims a new era today in announcing its 50th Anniversary Season, including classical repertory for a new generation; a world premiere musical-comedy; and a dynamic rejuvenation of its holiday favorite, A Christmas Carol, according to Artistic Director Darko Tresnjak and Managing Director Michael Stotts. Having delighted millions of theatregoers over the past half-century - 110,000 this year alone, Hartford Stage has produced numerous plays with an enduring impact on the American theatre.

Arena Stage Presents Lookingglass's METAMORPHOSES, Now thru 3/17

Following its acclaimed 16-week run at the Lookingglass Theatre Company this fall, Metamorphoses brings the mythical tales of Ovid to life at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, 10 years after the Broadway premiere. Written and directed by Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman, Metamorphoses is based on David Slavitt's translation and marks the first time Zimmerman will direct the production since its Broadway run. This is also the first time Zimmerman will stage Metamorphoses in the round, and a custom set will be designed with the largest pool of water ever created for this production. Metamorphoses dives onto the Fichandler Stage tonight, February 8-March 17, 2013.

Dallas Theater Center will conclude its four-year Shakespeare cycle with one of the playwright's greatest tragedies King Lear, a co-production with Trinity Repertory Company and directed by DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty. King Lear opens for previews tonight, January 18 and runs through Sunday, February 18.

AIRSWIMMING Makes DC Premiere as Part of Capital Fringe Festival

Charlotte Jones' Airswimming will get its area premiere as part of the seventh annual Capital Fringe Festival. Inspired by true events, Airswimming tells the story of two women who are incarcerated in an asylum for sexual deviancy and having a child out of wedlock in 1920s England. Forgotten by their families, the two women form a bond over their 50 year imprisonment in an alternate reality inspired by the one and only Doris Day.
