The distinguished Cuban-American playwright Eduardo Machado has created a touchstone piece by taking a one-act play with music, written in 1982, and turning it into a full-length, two-act musical. His 'Rosario and the Gypsies,' with songs by composer Rick Vartorella and lyrics by Mr. Machado and Mr. Vartorella, was a short, wild rock 'n roll play with music about the backstage romances and melodramas of a hippie performance troupe in southern California who were devoted to the art of change. Its songs were a combination of street pop and 60's-70's rock. It was produced in NYC by Ensemble Studio Theater in 1982 and it got Machado recognized as a writer to be reckoned with. Machado and Vartorella have now revised the piece and completed its story, adding a second act, in which we learn the future for its characters. Theater for the New City will present this revised and expanded version of 'Rosario and the Gypsies' from tonight, February 18 to March 8, directed by Machado.

Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. La MaMa - the world-renowned theatre complex in the heart of New York City's East Village - today announced its next production of its 53rd Season entitled 'LA MAMA EARTH,' featuring works that raise awareness of world ecology and social justice both locally and globally: the Mokwha Repertory Company from Korea's adaptation of Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST, set in 5th century Korea will play four performances only at the Ellen Stewart Theatre (66 E. 4 St.) from Nov. 20-23. This Korean TEMPEST is the 2nd installment of a TEMPEST trilogy being staged by La MaMa this season on the 2-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. The trilogy began last month with an accclaimed production of THE TEMPEST directed by Karin Coonrod with music by Elizabeth Swados, and will conclude in December with NELLA TEMPESTA from Italy.
Fifty years after its storied New York premiere, The Kitchen and the Goethe-Institut will present a 21st-century staging of Originale, a music-theater piece by pioneering German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007). Directed by Big Art Group's Caden Manson and Jemma Nelson, this staging, much like it's 1964 New York premiere, will feature a notable cross-section of contemporary performance artists and musicians whose actions are organized by Stockhausen's score and accompanied by noted electroacoustic compositions, such as his Kontakte.

Houston Ballet will give six performances of the program in the Brown Theater at Wortham Theater Center.
California Shakespeare Theater begins its 2014 season with one of the true trailblazing works in the American theater, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, directed by Patricia McGregor. A Raisin in the Sun plays at the Bruns Amphitheater from tonight, May 21 through June 15.
