Houston Symphony Presents 2014 Spec's Charitable Foundation Salute to Educator's Concert Tonight

Tonight, April 24, the Houston Symphony will perform their annual Spec's Charitable Foundation Salute to Educator's Concert at Jones Hall. The concert celebrates local educators - music and classroom teachers alike - while spotlighting young musicians. Led by Houston Symphony Associate Conductor Robert Franz, the orchestra will open the evening's festivities with Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, featuring 18-year-old Charles Seo, Houston native and Gold Medal winner of the 2013 Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition. Following intermission, the orchestra will be joined by the Houston Youth Symphony in a special side-by-side performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor.

The Houston Symphony and Musicians Reach Four-Year Labor Agreement

The Houston Symphony Society, along with its musicians, announced today thatthey have reached a four-year labor agreement significantly ahead of schedule. The new agreement will continue aseries of musician salary increases intended to retain and attract the finest orchestra musicians possible and createnew opportunities for expanded community/educational activities and revenue-generating concerts whilemaintaining a sustainable financial position. Under the terms of the next contract, Houston Symphony minimummusician salary will increase an average of 2.85% annually to $97,240 during the 2017-18 season from its currentlevel of $86,840.

On Today, March 13, the Houston Symphony will continue its legendary centennial celebration by performing alongside one of the leading figures in the recording industry, Steve Tyrell. Under the leadership of Houston Symphony Associate Conductor Robert Franz, Tyrell and the orchestra will perform American standards like 'You're So Nice to Come Home To,' 'The Way You Look Tonight' and 'I Get a Kick Out of You,' to name just a few. Tureck Bach Research Institute Tributes Rosalyn Tureck on Centenery of Her Birth Today

The Tureck Bach Research Institute will host a special celebration honoring renowned keyboard artist, scholar, and teacher Rosalyn Tureck, marking both 100 years since her birth (December 14, 1913) and 10 years since her death (July 17, 2003). Hailed as 'the high priestess of Bach' and acclaimed for her uncompromisingly rigorous, intelligent and detailed performances, Tureck devoted more than six decades to performing, researching, teaching and writing about Bach's works. The concert and commemoration will include a video retrospective, a live interview with former Tureck student and internationally acclaimed guitarist Sharon Isbin, and performances by pianist Golda Vainberg-Tatz, founder of the Tureck International Competition for Young Pianists, as well as two laureates from the 2013 competition: Athena Tsianos (age 17) and Allison To (age 12). The event takes place today, December 15, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Bruno Walter Auditorium in the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center, 111 Amsterdam Avenue (south of West 65th Street) and will be followed by a reception.

Tribute to Witold Lutoslawski with ACME and Steven Stucky Set for Tonight at Symphony Space

Tonight, December 13 at 7:30 pm, Symphony Space presents a centennial tribute to pioneering Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski (1913 - 1994). The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) will perform a selection of his chamber works, along with pieces by Steven Stucky, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and author of the critical biography Lutoslawski and His Music. The concert will be streamed live on Q2 Music, WQXR's online station devoted to contemporary classical music, and will include a conversation with Stucky and Symphony Space's Artistic Director, Laura Kaminsky.
