The 5th Avenue Theatre Looking for Creative Teens to Participate in New 10-MINUTE MUSICAL PROJECT

Seattle's The 5th Avenue Theatre is seeking the most creative and ambitious teens with a love for the stage to participate in an exciting new program called the “10-Minute Musical Project,” which involves local students in the process of creating new works in the musical theater genre. Washington State students ages 14-19 are eligible to apply for a variety of roles: composer, lyricist, playwright, stage manager, director, music director and marketer. Students will participate in workshops throughout the summer, culminating in a two-week long intensive rehearsal process and a staged reading presented as part of The 5th Avenue's NextFest: A Festival of New Musicals in October 2016.

North/South Consonance, Inc continues its 37th consecutive season of free-admission concerts on Tuesday evening June 7. Clarinetist Julia Heinen and oboist Richard Kravchak will join conductor Max Lifchitz and the North/South Chamber Orchestra to perform for the first time in New York recent works by Jose Luis Gomez, Daniel Kessner, Max Lifchitz and Marilyn Ziffrin. Ziffrin is celebrating her 90th birthday this season. The concert will take place at the auditorium of Christ & St Stephen's Church (120 West 69th Street) on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The free-admission event will start at 8 PM and end around 9:30 PM. The auditorium is ADA accessible. No tickets or reservations needed.

Lexington, KY—During his concession speech after losing the 1938 US Senate election, Kentucky Governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler paid tribute to his newly reelected rival. “I always thought Senator Barkley was indestructible,” he admitted, and at the time it would have been hard to argue otherwise. Alben Barkley had just secured his third term in the US Senate after seven consecutive terms representing Kentucky in the House, and he was on his way to an appointment as Harry S. Truman's vice president in 1949. His sole losing campaign had been a bid for Governor of Kentucky in 1928, but his habit of giving up to sixteen speeches a day and propensity for campaigning on horseback earned Barkley the nickname the “Iron Man” of politics.
