Today we celebrate the life and career of legendary Broadway and Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall in honor of her death this week at the age of 89.

A great, big Broadway season is on its way, with fourteen productions already slated to open in the next few months. With weeks until the craziness begins, there is still plenty of time to catch up on what's been going on at Broadway's already occupied theaters. Japan Society Gallery's new Summer Artist Residency Program returns for its second annual installment this July, introducing up-and-coming ink painter Cyoko Tamai (b. 1987). Working with the world's thinnest handmade paper, this 27-year-old artist reaches beyond the conventional notion of ink on paper painting. As her first visit to New York City, visitors to the Open Studio today, July 19 will be among the first in the U.S. to see her work outside Japan.

The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) has announced the full lineup of productions, concerts, readings and special events for its 11th annual festival. This year's Festival will begin July 7th and continue through July 27th.

Entering its sixth season in 2014-15, CONTACT!, the Philharmonic's new-music series, will include five programs featuring World, U.S., and New York Premieres, four of which explore the new-music scene from four different countries, and a fifth curated and hosted by composer John Adams. CONTACT! will return for three programs at SubCulture, co-presented with 92nd Street Y: John's Playlist, featuring works by five composers selected by John Adams; a concert of works by Israeli composers, featuring The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Lisa Batiashvili alongside Philharmonic musicians; and a performance of works by Italian composers. Two CONTACT! programs will take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art with Met Museum Presents: a concert of works by Nordic composers conducted in part by Music Director Alan Gilbert; and a program featuring works from Japan, conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky.

The Lincoln Center Theater (under the direction of Producing Artistic Director Andre Bishop) production of Act One, a play written and directed by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart, opens tonight, April 17, at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Let's see what the critics had to say...

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill opens tonight on Broadway. Lady Day stars five-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald under the direction of Lonny Price (110 in the Shade, A Class Act), will play a strictly limited 10-week engagement with only 70 performances at the Circle in the Square Theatre (1633 Broadway, on 50th Street btwn. Broadway and 8th Ave.).

Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Award nominee Kenny Leon, opens tonight, April 3 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street), the same theatre where the original production of A Raisin in the Sun opened 55 years ago. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Pops presents A St. Patrick's Day Celebration with Cherish the Ladies on March 14-16, 2014, at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Led by guest conductor Michael Krajewski, the Celtic celebration includes music of the Emerald Isle from the all-female traditional Irish music and dance ensemble, Cherish the Ladies.

Lincoln Center Theater (under the direction of Producing Artistic Director Andre Bishop) has announced that actors Santino Fontana and Tony Shalhoub will both be featured as the legendary writer/director Moss Hart at different stages of his life in its upcoming production of ACT ONE, a play written and directed by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart. The production, which will also feature a third actor who will play Mr. Hart as a young boy, is scheduled to begin previews Thursday, March 20 and open onThursday, April 17 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65 Street).

Nine of Miles Davis' earliest albums on Columbia Records, encompassing music that he recorded for the label in monaural sound from 1956 to 1961 (and released from 1957 to 1964), will be issued together on CD for the first time as Miles Davis:The Original Mono Recordings. This historic box set, comprising nine CDs in mini-LP replica jackets, will be available everywhere today, November 12, 2013 through Columbia/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

Portland's (Maine) Good Theater opened its 2013-2014 season with an incisive production of Bruce Norris' 2011 Pultizer Prize winning drama, Clybourne Park. The play, inspired by Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, explores the issues of subtle, yet pervasive racism in a Chicago neighborhood, first in 1959 and then in 2009. That the characters in each half of the drama have different names and ostensibly different experiences is a bitter illusion. History not only repeats itself, albeit it in a more understated and sophisticated way, but it also painfully demonstrates that prejudice dies hard; even time, education, and improving economics do not erase deeply ingrained fears and intolerance.

My belated mother once said, 'Your house is your house and your life is your life, and they really are two separate things.' But are they? Playwright Bruce Norris explores this question in Clybourne Park a provocative play set in an ordinary house in a fictional Chicago suburb.

Howard Hawks, the quintessential Hollywood director known for his mastery of many genres, will be the subject of a complete retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image from today, September 7 through November 10, 2013. The Museum will present 39 features. All of the films will be shown in 35mm-many in stunning restorations-except for Red Line 7000, which will be shown in 16mm.

Kagan, is a world-class performing arts series with an emphasis on music superstars from around the globe, charismatic and innovative dance performances, stunning opera stars in recital and spectacular contemporary cabaret. The Pace Presents season begins on September 21 with a big band tribute to the late, great lounge legend Esquivel from Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica, culminating onJune 1 with the reunion performance of Tina Croll and Jamie Cunningham'sdance/theatre piece From the Horse's Mouth.
