The history of the Southwest is both colorful and exciting. The country was expanding. It was growing; there were many heroes, many battles and many tragedies. It was like a glass of water sitting in the frigid cold. It froze and began to expand, the expansion could not be stopped, and soon, the glass burst. The final results were predictable as well as inevitable.
This year, Butterfield Books Inc. celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the book Prairie Bloomin' (formerly titled Prärieblomman in 1993), the second book in the Butter in the Well series by Kansas author Linda K. Hubalek. This popular book, recently updated, gives a personal glimpse into the pioneers' life to readers of all ages. Even though it was written for an adult audience, school children enjoy the stories of this real-life Swedish young woman who grew up on a Kansas farm.

What led me to this decision was American Ballet Theater's production of Sleeping Beauty that I saw on the July 6, 2012, the closing night of the season. Ned Wertimer, a versatile and prolific character actor who was perhaps best known as Ralph the Doorman for 11 seasons on TV's The Jeffersons, has died, it was announced today by his long time manager Brad Lemack. Wertimer passed away on January 2nd at the Sherman Village Health Care Center, outside of Los Angeles, from complications following a fall in his Burbank home in late November. He was 89.

The first Broadway Show my parents ever took me to see was Peter Pan. I remember this fluttery feeling in my stomach as the orchestra started to play the overture, and a few years later I was surprised to experience that same feeling as I waited off stage to make my entrance during a summer camp production of 'Charlotte's Web' (I played the Narrator). Of course I soon grew up, got training and also got critical and even though I still love performing in and attending shows, it's rare that I feel the butterflies. But last week, at Paper Mill Playhouse's production of Newsie's the Musical, I could feel them....and they were fluttering around inside my seven-year-old daughter's tummy as she sat beside me!
I usually choose not to review workshop productions, but, in regard to Deborah Johnson's Tsarina, breaking the rule proved worthwhile. The show has such great potential. It's incredible to think that other composers have not seized the opportunity to write a musical play about this most vibrant time frame of Russian history culminating in the Bolshevik revolution and in 1917 the downfall of Nicholas (Patrick Dillon Curry) and Alexandra (Kelly Derouin), the last czars in Russia.
