Tacoma Musical Playhouse is thrilled to be opening its 2010-11 Mainstage season with the outrageous musical Hairspray - the hilarious, high-energy, high-"volume" 1960's musical based on the John Waters film of the same name.  The music and dancing just doesn't get any hotter on South Sound stages than this show at TMP!

It's 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out -- and change is in the air.  Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad (played by Julie Drummond in her TMP debut), has a passion for dancing, and against her mother's (played by Puget Sound area favorite Frank Kohel) wishes, wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, racially integrate the television show, and find true love ... all without mussing her hair?

To enhance the theater-going experience, be sure to attend TMP's free preview presentation of Hairspray entitled Behind the Curtain! at TMP on the Sunday, September 19th at 7 pm. TMP cast, crew, directors and designers will provide an educational and interactive preview packed with enlightening facts about Hairspray, its history, this particular production, and song and dance highlights from the cast. The doors open at 6:40 pm on the 19th and no reservations are necessary.

Performances of Hairspray will take place Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm, with Saturday matinees at 2 pm on October 9th and 16th.  All performances will take place at Tacoma Musical Playhouse, 7116 6th Avenue in Tacoma.  All seating for TMP and TCMT productions is reserved, so advance purchase is strongly recommended.  Performances of this show will sell out in advance. Tickets are $27 for adults; $25 for students, seniors and military; and $20 for children 12 and younger. Due some of the subject content of this show, parental guidance is suggested.  Student Rush tickets are only $20 for all opening weekend performances. Group rates are available. For tickets or more information, please visit www.tmp.org or call the TMP Box Office at 253-565-6867.

Season Subscription Packages for the TMP Mainstage Season are also on sale and range in price from only $84-$134 and include tickets for all six Mainstage shows.
