Step Afrika! Debuts with THE MIGRATION: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence

By: Jan. 25, 2017

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jacob Lawrence, the University of Washington's Meany Center for the Performing Arts presents the Washington D.C.-based dance troupe Step Afrika! making its Seattle debut with The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence.

This evening-length work integrates projections of the painter's 60-panel masterpiece, The Migration Series with rhythmic footsteps, body percussion and spoken word to create a multi-media performance chronicling the early 20th century exodus of African Americans from the rural south. Meany Center co-commissioned the remounting and expansion of this important work in recognition of Lawrence's significance to Seattle and the University of Washington where Lawrence taught at the School of Art from 1971 until he retired in 1986.

The performances by Step Afrika! are part of a community-wide celebration of Lawrence's life and work that coincide with an exhibition at Seattle Art Museum of all 60 panels of Lawrence's masterwork The Migration Series.

Thursday-Saturday, February 16-18, 2017 at 8 p.m.. Meany Hall | University of Washington Seattle Campus. Tickets: $45-$50. ArtsUW Ticket Office: 206-543-4880
