SecondStory Repertory Theatre Presents TARTUFFE, 8/5-28

By:

Written in 1664 by French playwright, Molière, this satire of religious quackery was censored by King Louis XIV and the French Roman Catholic Church. In this rollicking comedy, Tartuffe, is a haughty, self-righteous phony that inveigles his way into Orgon's wealthy household.

Not content with robbing his host blind in the name of the Almighty, Tartuffe also attempts to seduce the lady of the house. Will everything be lost? Will Tartuffe's hypocrisy be revealed and Orgon's family redeemed? When Tartuffe was originally presented, the satire was so pointed that Molière was forced to shoehorn in a scene showing Tartuffe's punishment at the hands of the authorities--the best possible way of distancing Tartuffe's fraudulent piety with the real-life power abuses then being perpetrated by the Church. In spite of its tumultuous beginnings Tartuffe has become an enduring classic whose rhyming couplets, wickedly colorful characters, and story crafted will thoroughly charm and delight.
