Seattle Opera Announces 'Amelia' Events & Lectures, 3/13-4/26

In the weeks leading up to the world premiere of Amelia, Seattle Opera will present a variety of panel discussions, lectures, and other special events designed to provide unique insight into the development of this new work and reach out to new communities with particular ties to the opera's story and themes.

Events take place throughout the region and most are free of charge. Plus, many of our events will be streamed LIVE online for the very first time! Participate in person or from the comfort of your own computer where you can ask questions and join the discussion in real time. Community Panel Discussions at The Museum of Flight

Listen to voices representing many perspectives on the Vietnam War at these two Saturday afternoon events that are open to all. Free with museum admission.

Free Creating Amelia Lecture Discussions at University Village Barnes & Noble

What does it take to create a new opera? Get a glimpse of the commissioning, development, pre-production, and rehearsal process at these Monday evening presentations from members of the Amelia creative teams. All discussions will be moderated by Speight Jenkins.

Monday, April 12 - 6:00 p.m. Composing Amelia: Composer Daron Hagen and Librettist Gardner McFall
Monday, April 19 - 6:00 p.m. Designing Amelia: Set Designer Tom Lynch, Costume Shop Manager Susan Davis, and Lighting Designer Duane Schuler

Librettist Lecture at Richard Hugo House

Author Gardner McFall based the Amelia libretto on her autobiographical book of poetry, The Pilot's Daughter. She will give a lecture titled "Autobiographical Writing: From Life to Text" at Richard Hugo House, a center for local writers.

Amelia Preview Lectures

In the weeks prior to opening night, members of Seattle Opera's Education Department travel around the region to present preview lectures to a variety of audiences. You can also listen to 98.1 Classical KING FM at 7:30 every night of the week before the opera begins to hear General Director Speight Jenkins preview Amelia.
