Cornish College of the Arts Announces 2012 Art and Design BFA Show, 5/11

Cornish College of the Arts today announced the 2012 Art and Design BFA Show.  This annual exhibition showcases the undergraduate thesis work of 30 Art and 39 Design students. These emerging artists and designers are poised to confront the opportunities and challenges ahead with the same creativity and determination that developed throughout their time at Cornish.  Collectively, they represent a diversity of methods, techniques, and ideas that reflect the contemporary visual landscape, while hinting at what’s ahead.

“This year, the Art and Design shows are united again, with the recent move of the Art Department’s Senior Studios to the now permanent home at 1000 Virginia.  We will be celebrating the close proximity of both Art and Design galleries by extending elements of the reception outside. “The Art BFA Show is the culmination of their research, theory, and studio practice in painting, photography, print, sculpture, video, digital media, drawing and the endless combinations there of. It is also a full immersion in student-led initiatives that address every aspect of an exhibition of this magnitude. Not only have the artists created a distinctive body of work, but they have built out and prepped the exhibition space, taken the lead in the professional shoots and design layouts for catalogs and PR materials, installed their exhibitions, and created personal digital books as document. “The Design BFA Show is comprised of senior degree project work from Visual Communication, Motion Design, and Interior Design. For the seniors, this capstone exhibit marks an important transition from the proving ground of undergraduate education to graduate school and/or professional practice. The projects represent the culmination of a year-long process of conceptual, critical, and technical development, working towards the exhibited presentation. One of the presiding truisms of our day holds that we can only understand the visual through such social-cultural, meaning-making processes. This is as true of making as it is of spectatorship, ideally in productive tension, neither collapsing into the other.
