1518: The Dancing Plague is a satirical comedy written by Hannah Ponturo, based on the real mass hysteria that led to uncontrollable dancing in medieval Europe. The play follows two peasants, Katherine and Anna, who rekindle their long-fractured romance while the city of Strasbourg descends into chaos as authorities and clergy scramble to contain the mysterious dancing plague. Drawing parallels to modern crises including the Covid-19 outbreak, the play explores love and loss in a time of limbo. It is produced in collaboration with Open Variations Theater, a nonprofit theatre company based in New York City.
