Cast and Creative Announced FoR A DOLL'S HOUSE a Citizens Theatre

The Citizens Theatre has announced the cast and creative team for Nora: A Doll's House, a bold adaptation of Ibsen's classic text by Stef Smith.

Olivier Award-winning Stef Smith (Swallow, Girl in the Machine, Human Animals) will give Ibsen's classic text a poetic and visceral re-imagining by radically re-examining the famous play for contemporary audiences. Telling Nora's story over three time periods, this new interpretation by one of Scotland's most talked about playwrights will explore the role of women from the turn of the century, through women's suffrage and into modern times.

Nora: A Doll's House will be the first production in the theatre's Citizens Women season; a season committed to putting women actors, directors and stories centre stage.

Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre said, 'Stef is one of Scotland's most exciting writers. I love her brilliant, radical and ambitious interpretation of Ibsen's play. I am delighted to welcome her to the Citz for the first time alongside the wonderful director Elizabeth Freestone. I'm sure together they will create something memorable for our audience.

Director Elizabeth Freestone will lead an exceptional cast in this thrilling reinvention. Freestone was the Artistic Director of Pentabus Rural Theatre Company until 2017 and was recently appointed Artistic Associate at English Touring Theatre.

It's not often a script like this lands in your inbox. Stef's version of A Doll's House is like the original a powerful rollercoaster charting the tumultuous events of three days in a deeply troubled household. Secrets are revealed, lives turned inside out and the wider ills of society exposed. But it's also more than that a deeply poetic meditation on our inner lives, a radically theatrical take on the world of the play, and a startling call to arms for audiences today. Directing it is a thrilling prospect, sitting as it does amongst such an exciting and empowering season at the Citz , Elizabeth Freestone.

Taking on the titular role of Nora will be a hat trick of Scottish talent.

Maryam Hamidi, co-writer of the Amnesty Award nominated The Chronicles of Irania (A Moment's Peace Theatre Company) and well-known for her role as Leyla Brodie in River City, she has worked with many leading Scottish Theatre Companies including Vox Motus (Flight), Frozen Charlotte (The Library) and National Theatre of Scotland (The Recovery Position, Oedipus The King and Home).

Joining Maryam is Molly Vevers. Molly was awarded The Stage Award for Acting Excellence and was nominated for Best Actress in a Studio Production at the 2016 Manchester Theatre Awards for her performance in Olivier-Award nominee James Fritz' Ross & Rachel. She may be familiar to many from her appearances in Dundee Rep Theatre productions Kora, Time and the Conways and The Snow Queen.

Completing the trio of Noras is Citizens Theatre actor intern Anna Russell-Martin, who has recently appeared in productions A Christmas Carol and Cyrano de Bergerac since joining the company.

Completing the cast is Michael Dylan, (White, Catherine Wheels; Girl in the Machine, Traverse; One Man Two Guvnors, National Tour) who many may recognise as The Mole from the 2013 series of Big Brother (Endemol), Timothy Barrow (Horizontal Collaboration, Fire Exit; A War of Two Halves, This is My Story/Nonsense Room; Julius Caesar, Bard in the Botanics) and Daniel Ward (Abigail's Party, Hull Truck; The Barbershop Chronicles, Fuel Theatre; The Amen Corner, National Theatre) who makes his first appearance with the Citizens Theatre company.

Award-winning Designer, Tom Piper MBE, will return to the Citizens company. Tom has designed many Citizens' shows including Cyrano de Bergerac (2018), Long Day's Journey Into Night (2018), Hay Fever (2017) and The Libertine (2014). His 2014 collaboration with Paul Cummins and The Tower of London, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, saw over 5 million people visit the installation, won him an MBE for services to theatre and First World War Commemoration and garnered world-wide interest and support. A number of Piper's designs have also been nominated for Olivier Awards including Orfeo (2015), Red Velvet (2012) and The Histories (2009) for which he won best costume design.

He will be joined by Composer Michael John McCarthy (Wendy and Peter Pan, Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh; What Girls Are Made Of, Traverse Edinburgh; Trainspotting, Citizens Theatre), Movement Director Emily-Jane Boyle (The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black Black Oil, Dundee Rep; Oresteia: This Restless House, Citizens Theatre; The Crown, Netflix), Assistant Director Joanna Bowman (A Christmas Carol and Cyrano de Bergerac, Citizens Theatre) and Lighting Designer Lee Curran (Jesus Christ Superstar, Regent's Park Open Air Theatre; Doctor Faustus, Royal Shakespeare Company; Untouchable, The Royal Ballet)

Nora: A Doll's House will be presented by the Citizens Theatre at Tramway as part of its residency programme while its Gorbals home undergoes redevelopment.
