1518: THE DANCING PLAGUE Will Play Edinburgh Festival Fringe This Summer

Fresh from performances in Los Angeles, California at the Daredevil Festival, and a sold-out reading at the Lyric Hyperion Theater last August, 1518: The Dancing Plague is a satirical comedy based on the very real mass hysteria that led to uncontrollable dancing in medieval Europe.

1518: The Dancing Plague follows two peasants, Katherine and Anna, who rekindle their long-fractured romance while the city of Strasbourg descends into chaos. Meanwhile, authorities and clergy scramble to contain the mysterious outbreak of the infamous 'dancing plague.'

Audiences can expect a dance party they seriously won't forget, as Ponturo's play invites them to to 'shake their a** and dance 'til they (hopefully don't!) die!' Drawing uncanny parallels to the chaos and crises of our modern age, including the Covid-19 outbreak, the 1518: The Dancing Plague explores love and loss in a time of limbo.

1518: The Dancing Plague is written by Hannah Ponturo, a proud LA valley girl with formidable New York theater kid aspirations. Ponturo's work has been produced at the Lyric Hyperion Theater in LA and Ensemble Studio Theater in New York. She's worked as a Writer's Assistant/Showrunner's Assistant on BET+ and Paramount's, Diarra From Detroit and Beef Season 2 for Netflix. She is a 'former shy child who suddenly has a lot to say.'

1518: The Dancing Plague is produced in collaboration with Open Variations Theater, whose mission is for audiences to experience innovative theatre. Whether reimagining lesser known plays, or highlighting new works for the stage and beyond, Open Variations Theater believes that finding creative ways to layer in aspects of the rich artistic communities in New York City can only elevate the stories being told. Open Variations Theater is a nonprofit theatre company based in New York City that offers a diverse range of innovative and inclusive productions, appealing to both the existing artistic community and a new generation of potential theater goers. Their interdisciplinary approach reimagines existing plays as well as showcases new works, emphasizing creativity, collaboration and innovation.

1518: The Dancing Plague is performing at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 24 - 29th August at 21.50pm (50 mins), theSpaceUK Studio at theSpaceTriplex (venue number 38).
