As sad as it is beautiful, Puccini’s shimmering classic has been captivating audiences for over a century. Set on the hills above the Nagasaki harbor in Imperial Japan, Madama Butterfly is a window to a world of opposing cultures and values.

Kostis Protopapas conducts. Octavio Cardenas, last with OSB for 2016’s Carmen, directs. Eleni Calenos (Mimi/La Bohème, 2018) and Harold Meers (Le Chevalier des Grieux/Manon, 2017 and Don José/Carmen, 2016) return as the doomed geisha and sailor.

Opera SB celebrates World Opera Day, October 25, 2019 with a week of free opera events for the Santa Barbara community. All events are free and open to the public. This includes the popular noontime concert at the downtown SB Public Library, short performances at Pianos on State Street by the Chrisman Studio Artists, and the key event of the week: a Free Open Rehearsal of Madama Butterfly at the SB Courthouse Sunken Gardens on October 27, from 3-5PM.

Opera SB opens its 26th season with several returning favorite artists. Soprano Eleni Calenos and tenor Harold Meers will headline a lavish production of Puccini's opera, Madama Butterfly 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at The Granada Theatre.
