Human Nature to Bring TALES OF A SEXUAL TOMBOY to San Francisco International Fringe Festival
Human Nature, winner of the 2012 Prize of Hope, presents the world premiere of 'TALES OF A SEXUAL TOMBOY' as part of the 2016 San Francisco International Fringe Festival: SF Fringe. A bold one woman comedy written and performed by Joyful Raven, directed by Jael Weisman, the show will run September 9 - 24.
Tales of a Sexual Tomboy is a raucous one-woman comedy about a horny tomboy, equipped with bad boundaries from her hippie upbringing, looking for empowerment in all the wrong places. Blending standup and story telling, Joyful Raven recounts some of the more hilarious and misguided moments from her treacherous path towards sexual liberation. She tries, and often fails, not to overwhelm her lovers by being too horny, too bold or too passionate. Treading on the boundary between comedy and tragedy, the piece asks some important questions: How is a woman to display her power in a world that still asks her to be smaller, more passive, and more demure than she would like to be? Why, when we have come so far on the road towards women's liberation are we still afraid to communicate our desires? With unflinching honesty, Raven delivers 60 minutes of dark comedy with deep heart.
Joyful Raven, whose parents ran a political theater company, grew up on the radical stage where she was forced into political positions and animal leotards long before she was a consenting adult. Due to this unusual childhood, she brings to her work a unique body of experience gained from two decades of collaborating with iconic members of the ?San? Francisco Mim? e Troupe and??Dell' Arte ?International. Raven's credits include lead actor and coauthor of 4 plays for 'Prize of Hope' winning? company ?Human Nature and cofounder of the ensembledriven theate? r company ?Rococo Ri?sque?, winner of ?SF Weekly 'Best Theater Ensemble' 2005. Raven has also appeared as an actor in many projects on stage and film? including ?Odyssey Works, an immersive theater project?;?The Pursuit of Happyness, with Will Sm?ith; and?Spring Awakening, directed by Broadway and West End director Stafford Arima.? ?Raven studied theater at ?Sarah Lawrence College in New York and earned an MFA in Dramatic Art from UC Davis. She is also teaching artist at Berkeley Rep School of Theater, UC Davis, and Florida International University.
Jael Weisman is a founding member of the Dell'Arte Players Co. and during his tenure there he directed most of their early works, received multiple 'Dramalogue Awards' and toured extensively throughout South America and Europe to international acclaim.? He later directed four productions at the San Diego Repertory Co. including the American premiere of Peter Barnes' Red Noses, which received numerous awards including the 'Best Production Award' from San Diego Critics Circle. He has had the honor to codirect and collaborate with such notables as Carlo MazzoneClementi and Joe Chaikin and directed the original production of The Dragon Lady's Revenge, which traveled to NY and was awarded an Obie.
