C.W. Nevius Brings 'The Oakland Raiders, True Crime & Coming Of Age' To The Marsh

This November, The Marsh San Francisco presents C.W. Nevius' The Oakland Raiders, True Crime & Coming of Age in SF. Thirty-eight years ago, Nevius came to San Francisco from a small newspaper in Colorado Springs, to work at the San Francisco Chronicle. Assigned to cover the Oakland Raiders, Nevius was taken along for the ride of his life to the Super Bowl. He was also involved in covering the story of a shocking sexual assault case at the University of San Francisco, featuring an All-American basketball player. Throughout these experiences, many lessons were learned, many from a crusty, chain-smoking editor from - of all places - Oklahoma. Directed by David Ford and written and performed by Nevius, The Oakland Raiders, True Crime & Coming of Age in SF will be presented November 16-December 15, 2018 (press opening: November 30) with performances 8:00pm Fridays and 8:30pm Saturdays at The Marsh San Francisco Studio, 1062 Valencia St., San Francisco. C.W. (Chuck) Nevius (Playwright/Performer) was a sports columnist at the San Francisco Chronicle for 20 years, covering the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, Final Four, Masters golf, and World Cup Soccer. He covered eight Olympic Games in Australia, Korea, Japan, Spain, Norway, France, Canada, and Los Angeles. He then moved to the news side of things and wrote a column called "On San Francisco," which covered the issues and politics in the city. When he retired in 2016, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee declared it "Chuck Nevius Day." Currently, Nevius is writing the Sunday sports column for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

David Ford (Director) has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him "the solo performer maven," "the monologue maestro," "the dean of solo performance," and "the solo performer's best friend." Collaborators include Geoff Hoyle, Echo Brown, Brian Copeland, Charlie Varon, Marilyn Pittman, Rebecca Fisher, Wayne Harris, and Marga Gomez. As a director, Ford has directed both solo and ensemble work regionally at The Public Theater, Second Stage, Theatre for the New City (NY), Highways (LA) and Woolly Mammoth (Washington, DC) as well as at theaters around the Bay Area including Magic Theatre and Marin Theatre Company. He is also a published playwright.

The Marsh is known as "a breeding ground for new performance." It was launched in 1989 by Founder and Artistic Director Stephanie Weisman, and now annually hosts more than 600 performances of 175 shows across the company's two venues in San Francisco and Berkeley. A leading outlet for solo performers, The Marsh's specialty has been hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as "solo performances that celebrate the power of storytelling at its simplest and purest."
