At Berkeley Repertory Theatre, audiences are screaming with laughter, critics are gushing with praise, and cats are screeching in horror... It's unanimous: The Lieutenant of Inishmore is a hit.

Last week, Obie Award-winning director Les Waters let loose with another shocking script from Oscar-winning author Martin McDonagh - and they've scored a direct hit! Today, Berkeley Rep announced an extension for the crazy comedy that floods the stage with 30 gallons of blood at every performance. With six shows added to the schedule, Lieutenant will now play in the Roda Theatre through May 24.

"We had such fun working on this show," Waters remarks, "so it's wonderful to see audiences enjoy watching it as well. Martin McDonagh has a singular ability to mix the humorous with the horrible, confronting us with the incredible inconsistencies that exist in our everyday world. The resulting script is truly outrageous, and I'm grateful for the fine work of the actors, designers, and artisans on this production - not to mention the special-effects expert and our hardworking deck crew who mop up the mess night after night."

The Lieutenant of Inishmore employs explosive dialogue and a perfectly oiled plot that is brutal, bloody, yet irresistibly funny. As part of an I.R.A. splinter group, Padraic thinks nothing of murdering and mutilating his enemies - but the sudden death of his beloved cat leaves him heartbroken. Amidst the comedy and carnage, this provocative play delivers cutting commentary on the endless cycle of violence that engulfs our world.

McDonagh was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe this year for his first feature film, In Bruges. He'd already earned an Oscar for Six Shooter, four Tony nominations for Best Play, and England's prestigious Olivier Award for The Pillowman. The associate artistic director of Berkeley Rep, Waters recently staged In the Next Room (or the vibrator play), which is headed for Broadway. His other hits in Berkeley include The Glass Menagerie, The Pillowman, and TRAGEDY: a tragedy. His work has ranked among the Top 10 Plays of 2007 in Time Magazine, 2006 in the New York Times, and 2005 in Time Out New York.

Enlist today! Tickets to Inishmore start at $33 - or only $16.50 for anyone under 30 years of age.
