BWW Reviews: BILLY ELLIOT Made the Audience Stand Up and Dance

The latest Broadway show to hit the stage at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio Texas is Billy Elliot, which ended its run yesterday, April 1. From the moment the lights dimmed, you couldn't help but be drawn into the story of struggle and survival as young Billy and his family worked through many issues. Many could relate to the struggles and emotions in this little family.

Billy's father (played by Rich Hebert) and brother (played by Cullen R. Titmas) worked hard to support the family by working in the coal mines of Northern England. When the coal miners go on strike, many new struggles and emotions are brought forward as the family just wants to survive day-to-day. Billy Elliot (played on Thursday evening by Kylend Hetherington) did what he could to try to keep himself occupied during this difficult time. He stubbles upon a ballet dance group one day at the local community center and ends up becoming a part of the group.

Kylend Hetherington had the audience captivated as he danced onstage. His performance was topnotch and Keyland's energy was felt throughout the historic theatre. It makes you wonder where all the energy comes from as he moved across the stage with grace and ease. His dancing was amazing and his perfection showed as he danced. His singing proved to be just as perfect as his dancing and his acting had you cheering and crying for young Billy.

Another standout performance of the evening was Mrs. Wilkinson (played by Leah Hocking). Her portrayal of the disillusioned dance teacher made you feel sorry for her. Her ability to keep the
audience engaged and focused on the talents of young Billy were perfect. She has an amazing voice and danced in high heels so comfortably. The interest she takes in Billy's dancing ability and natural talent helped you to see beyond the bitterness and sadness of the life she had and give her hope that someone somewhere was worth fighting for. Leah Hocking as Ms. Wilkinson was grand from start to finish.

If you missed it here in San Antonio, it will be coming to Austin, Texas in December to the Bass Theatre.
