SCERA to Showcase Utah Premiere Brass in 'A Night at the Movies,' 3/10

By:

Movie music from such popular films as "Batman," "Jurassic Park," "The Flintstones," "Star Wars," Superman," "The Cowboys," "The Mission," "Saving Private Ryan" and more will be presented with a unique sound when the Utah Premiere Brass presents "A Night at the Movies" Saturday March 10 at the SCERA Center for the Arts.

The hour-and-a-half concert will begin at 7 p.m. in Showhouse II, 745 S. State St., Orem.  Reserved-seat tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors (age 65+), students (w/ID), and children (age 3-11). They are available from 10am-6pm weekdays and Saturdays from 12Noon-6pm at the SCERA main office, by calling (801) 225-ARTS, online at www.scera.org, or at the box office 30 minutes prior to the concert.

The professional ensemble, which began performing in 2000 and is under the baton of Dr. Kirt Saville, is patterned after British-style brass bands, which developed in the late 19th century. Featured instruments include cornets, flugelhorn, tenor horns, baritones, trombones, euphoniums, B flat and E flat basses and percussion.

"This is a distinctive genre with a specific style," says trombone musician and music educator Matt Reynolds.

"I like being in the band because we're such a versatile ensemble," he says, adding that they are not pigeon-holed. "We selected movie themes for our SCERA concert because we thought it would appeal to a broad family audience, and we know SCERA is known for its family shows."

"As a brass player, the band is like the Olympics," Reynolds adds. "There is nothing more challenging and fulfilling. We take a lot of symphonic music and transcribe it. Playing parts traditionally reserved for woodwinds and strings makes such a cool sound. We also have instruments unique to the brass band. It's my favorite thing to do musically."

The Utah Premiere Brass has a devoted following, but Reynolds says the group hopes that new audiences who hear the band and music that has created some of the most memorable moments in film will draw them into other concerts and musical styles.

"Give us a try," Reynolds says. "You'll probably really like us."  SCERA President & CEO Adam J. Robertson agrees. "We're thrilled the Utah Premiere Brass has a new home at SCERA, and this is the third of four concerts in their season here."
