The professional dance company SHAPING SOUND recently performed at the Capitol Theatre in a concert that was electrifying and stunning.

The artistry and athletic prowess of the dancers was a wonder to behold as they effortlessly and flawlessly performed the incredibly difficult contemporary choreography, fused with a pleasing blend of other dance styles.

The satisfying concert was a danced-through piece based on a quotation by J.M. Barrie about the moment between dreaming and waking. The manner in which the information about the concert was presented in the evening's program allowed for audience members to experience the story of the dreamer and come to their own understandings and interpretations of its meaning.

The choreographers, lead dancers, and founders of the company include Emmy-nominated Teddy Forance; Emmy-nominated Nick Lazzarini, season one winner of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE (SYTYCD); Kyle Robinson, who played Diesel in first national tour of the most recent WEST SIDE STORY revival; and two-time Emmy-nominated Travis Wall, season two runner-up of SYTYCD. Wall made his Broadway debut in the 2001 revival of THE MUSIC MAN on Broadway and was choreographer for the recent re-imagined Off-Broadway production of BARE at New World Stages.

The heart of the story was the dreamer, impeccably performed by Jaime Goodwin. Goodwin frequently performs on SYTYCD and Dancing with the Stars. She has also been seen on GLEE and in ROCK OF AGES and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3.

The other members of the company have performed on SYTYCD and other TV shows, including scripted, competition, and awards shows.

The set was simple but versatile and often morphed into critical elements of the choreography. The production design was by Jesus Rodriguez, who has diverse experience working in theatre, dance, film, commercials, and music videos, with associate production design by Hollywood art director Gregory Anderson.

The incredible lighting design, which made bold use of color and haze, emphasized every nuance of the abstract narrative and the dancers' movement. It was designed by Seth Jackson and Nathan Scheuer, production designers for MANILOW ON BROADWAY, The MUNY, and major artists such as Jason Mraz and Carrie Underwood.

Aficionados of contemporary dance should do everything in their power to attend a SHAPING SOUND concert if ever near a city in which they are performing.
