Review: RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER: THE MUSICAL at the Capitol Theatre Brings Nostalgic Cheer
The national tour of RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER: THE MUSICAL, which played at the Capitol Theatre this past weekend, is a vibrant, nostalgic re-creation of the beloved stop motion television special.
Nearly every song in RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER: THE MUSICAL (stage adaptation by Robert Penola, music and lyrics by Johnny Marks) is a classic, including "A Holly Jolly Christmas," "We Are Santa's Elves," "Silver and Gold," and, of course, the title song. The show tells the legendary tale of the reindeer with the glowing nose who overcomes ridicule to guide Santa's sleigh one foggy Christmas night. After an adventure with his new pals, prospector Yukon Cornelius and Hermey the elf, Rudolph learns that being a misfit isn't so bad.
The physical production of this tour slavishly imitates the design of the television special. In some ways this is creatively limiting, but it also brings with it an excitement to see how the well-known visuals are translated to the stage. Some of the elements are more successful than others, but when it works, it really works. This is especially true in the case of the puppets, by Alex in Wonderland. Bumble, the snow monster, is a wonderfully commanding presence whenever he appears, and the scenes with the misfit toys are truly delightful.
The lighting design by Jean-Yves Tessier, projection design by Jonathan Infante, and flying effects by ZFX Inc. also contribute to many magical moments.
Some of the highlights of the well-rehearsed cast include Sarah Miller-Crews as Rudolph, Nick Ley as Hermey, and Ryan Coon as the narrator, Sam the Snowman.
