Napa Valley Opera House Announces Upcoming Events, 11/4 - 11/7

The Napa Valley Opera House has announced its upcoming featured events in November.  On Wednesday, November 4, the Opera House will feature high-wire walker Philippe Petit in discussion, followed by a screening of his Academy Award-winning documentary Man on Wire. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers will play the venue on Thursday, November 5, while on Saturday, November 7 they will present the Southern string band Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Man on Wire

Philippe Petit gained fame for his high-wire walk between the Twin Towers in New York City on August 7, 1974. For his feat, he used a 450-pound cable and a custom-made 26-foot long, 55-pound balancing pole. Man on Wire is an Academy Award-winning 2008 documentary film directed by James Marsh chronicling this amazing feat.

The Man on Wire screening will be Wednesday, November 4, 2009; film: 7pm, the discussion will follow. It will be shown at the Napa Valley Opera House; 1030 Main Street, downtown Napa. Ticket price is $35.

Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers: "An Evening of Bluegrass and Banjo"

Steve Martin wraps up his tour in support of The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, at the Napa Valley Opera House on Thursday, November 5. The album currently sits at the top of the Billboard Bluegrass Album Chart. After a successful run with a limited release, multi-talented Grammy and Emmy winning actor/comedian/musician and bestselling author Steve Martin released the album on Rounder Records on May 19, 2009. Martin, a three-time Grammy winner, the latest for his collaboration with Earl Scruggs on Foggy Mountain Breakdown with Earl Scruggs, began writing a string of new banjo songs, some with lyrics and some as instrumentals. An album 45 years in the making, The Crow ... features special vocal appearances by Mary Black, Vince Gill, Tim O'Brien and Dolly Parton.

"An Evening of Bluegrass and Banjo" will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2009, 8pm at the Napa Valley Opera House; 1030 Main Street, downtown Napa. Ticket prices are $125 and $110.

Carolina Chocolate Drops

The Carolina Chocolate Drops, returning to NVOH after their popular performance in 2007, are a group of young African-American string band musicians that have come together to play the rich tradition of fiddle and banjo music in Carolinas' Piedmont. The music of Carolina Chocolate Drops was recently featured in the Denzel Washington movie The Great Debaters.

Carolina Chocolate Drops will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009, 8PM at the Napa Valley Opera House; 1030 Main Street, downtown Napa. Ticket prices are $30 / $35.
