The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) is pleased to stage a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. The Norwegian playwright's 19th-century antiheroine--and one of the famous enigmas of the stage--is the newly married, beautiful and inscrutable wife of an academic for whom the bourgeois life is simply not good enough. Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella, who authored this adaptation of Ibsen's masterpiece, directs Marianna Bassham (Joan in Far Away, Charlotte in The Real Thing) in the title role.

Hedda Gabler runs from October 23 through November 30 at The Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St., Pawtucket, RI. Tickets are $41 and $49 (depending on day/time); preview performances (Oct. 23-26) just $30. Call 401-723-4266or order online at gammtheatre.org.

ABOUT HEDDA GABLER

1889: Hedda Gabler has returned from an extended honeymoon with her kind but tediously academic husband. Beautiful, self-possessed and also haunted, she is already bored of marriage. Suffocated by bourgeois society and disdainful of intellectual pursuits, she tries to fulfill her aimless desires by manipulating the fates of those around her...with tragic results. Offering no easy answers, Ibsen's Hedda Gabler is a fascinating, paradoxical portrait of a woman slipping into despair as her options narrow in a world expanding for both sexes.

"The great British director Richard Eyre wrote in an introduction to his own version of Hedda Gabler: 'The best way of understanding a play is to write it - even if that means merely typing a script yourself or copying it out longhand. It obliges you to question the meaning of every word, speech, gesture and stage direction.' This adaptation has been percolating since our version of A Doll's House in 2010 and is my attempt to understand this troubling and most complex of all of Ibsen's plays," Estrella said. "I've always felt its greatness, but rarely had I actually seen it proven on stage. After pulling it apart and putting it back together again, its greatness now seems obvious and unmistakable. Ibsen's Hedda Gabler is a masterpiece of almost unmatchable depth and power. The raison d'être for this new version is to make that loud and undeniably clear to Gamm audiences."
