Review: EDGES at Reverie Theatre Group
The production runs through April 25th
Reverie Theatre Group presents ‘Edges,’ a funny, thoughtful, highly entertaining four-person song cycle, with no spoken dialogue or discernible plot, that explores the challenges of young adults, including family dynamics, career opportunities, and most significantly, the trials and tribulations of finding that special someone.
‘Edges’ was written in 2005 by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the award-winning composing duo best known for “Dear Evan Hansen” and “La La Land,” during their sophomore year as theater students at the University of Michigan. A friend joined me for last night’s performance, and at its end he said, “that was like ‘Company’ for twentysomethings,” referring to Sondheim’s classic musical about love, marriage, and relationships. He meant it as a compliment, and I can’t think of a more fitting description.
Under Alyssa Rose Germaine’s sensitive, solid direction, Meighread Dandeneau (Woman 1), Ray Fournier (Man 1), Divina Jania Hernandez (Woman 2), and Jon Klos (Man 2) make up the fabulous foursome—with Kayla Suchite and Jacob Olsen rounding out the talented ensemble—who perform a series of solos, duets, and group numbers ranging in temperament from fun and frivolous to serious and contemplative.
The profound opener, ‘Become,’ with the oft-repeated line, “I’m afraid to be who I am, and who I want to become,” sets the tone for 90 minutes of amusing, enlightening stories told through songs about sharing, caring, and introspection, beautifully executed by music director Dave Laros.
Highlights include Dandeneau’s “Lying There,” where she laments not being in love with the man lying next to her; Klos makes us laugh then ponder the reality of parenthood in “Along the Way,” Hernandez perfectly demonstrates the exhausting adventures of dating in “I’ve Gotta Run,” and Fournier dreams of a better life away from home in “Monticello.”
Select duets provide other memorable moments, like “I Hmmm You,” to help describe the feeling between like and love, and “Pretty Sweet Day,” where two friends have to adjust when the third member of their trio falls in love, while some of the group numbers are veritable showstoppers, particularly “Coasting,” a clever examination of small talk, and “Like Breathing,” the final number about learning to love yourself.
‘Edges’ is an enjoyable, affecting coming-of-age experience with a vibrant, skilled cast of performers and a lively soundtrack with themes that focus on a certain age group but are relatable and familiar to everyone.
‘Edges’ runs through April 25th at Reverie Theatre Group’s 134 Collaborative located at 134 Mathewson Street in Providence, RI. For tickets, visit https://events.humanitix.com/edges
