Epic Launches New Book Club Image

Epic Theatre Company announces their first ever Book Club!

For the first time, audiences will be able to read along with books that tie in to the productions in the season.

"This is such an exciting project for us," says Epic Artistic Director Kevin Broccoli, "I'm an avid reader, and one of my favorite things about reading is getting to discuss great books with other enthusiastic readers. Theater audiences are known for having bold opinions and brilliant insight when it comes to discussing text, so I think this is the perfect marriage, and we're kicking it off with one of my favorite books of all time."

The first selection of the Epic Book Club is "Letters to a Young Artist" by Anna Deveare Smith. Epic will hold its Inaugural Book Club in conjunction with one of its performances of "Fires in the Mirror" also by Deveare Smith, which is being presented at the theater in September.

"We've produced lots of Anna Deveare Smith's work," says Broccoli, "She is truly an American prophet, and her book 'Letters to a Young Artist' is one of the best things I've ever read. It's a small book, packed with so much wisdom and inspiration that for awhile I was giving it out as a Christmas gift to every creative type I knew."

"Letters to a Young Artist: Straight-up Advice on Making a Life in the Arts-For Actors, Performers, Writers, and Artists of Every Kind" covers everything any young (or old) artist would want to know about how to make art in a world that isn't always kind to artists. Through anecdotal letters, she gives you a lifetime's worth of advice in one short volume.

"We're always looking for new ways to engage," says Broccoli, "This is another chance to approach what we put onstage from a different point of view, and we hope it's going to be yet another interesting facet of the Epic experience.
