Review: THE WIZ at Bass Concert Hall
Phoenix Assata La Freniere brings warmth and strong vocals to Dorothy, giving the character an approachable sincerity that anchors the evening nicely. Elijah Ahmad Lewis as Scarecrow, D Jerome as Tin Man, and Cal Mitchell as Lion lean heavily into physical comedy and stylized movement, becoming wonderfully entertaining companions along the journey. Much of the production’s humor comes from its embrace of the characters’ sass and oversized personalities, which generate some of the night’s most enjoyable moments.
Review: DISNEY'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at Bass Concert Hall
Stanley A. Meyer’s set turns like the pages of a storybook caught in a breeze, drifting from the cheerful village to the shadowed castle with cinematic grace. Ann Hould Ward dresses the world in rich jewel tones, instantly familiar yet elevated for the stage. Natasha Katz bathes scenes in deep blues and warm golds that guide mood with a painter’s touch. Darrel Maloney’s projections shimmer just enough to modernize without overwhelming. Matt West’s choreography snaps with clean energy, and the tap number crackles through the audience like a live wire.
Review: FUNNY GIRL at Texas Performing Arts Center
At its heart is Fanny Brice, a role demanding razor-sharp comedic instincts and heartrending vulnerability. Hannah Shankman rises to the challenge with remarkable physicality, impeccable timing, and vocal prowess that fills the theater. Petite in stature yet larger than life, she captures Brice’s self-deprecating wit and aching longing for love. She shines in every number, but “Don’t Rain on My Parade” is an undeniable showstopper, her powerhouse vocals soaring with defiance and determination, bringing the audience to rapturous applause.
