Theatre Review: ‘Shucked’ at The Hippodrome Theatre
“Shucked” doesn’t necessarily do any ground-breaking here. You have seen this plot before but the spectacular voices, great humor, and message about love (‘Maybe Love”) offer a joyous and hopeful respite from the challenges of the real world.
Theatre Review: ‘& Juliet’ at The Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center
Obvious influences from the jukebox musicals “Moulin Rouge,” “Six,” “Head Over Heels,” and the more recent “Once Upon a One More Time” (using the music of Britney Spears) and the hilarity of “Something Rotten” are on display. Important issues of feminism and self-acceptance (and acceptance) are a part of this fantasy that blends two worlds eight centuries apart. That said, it feels like it is trying to do much, skimming over the surface of the issues which are resolved too easily.
Theatre Review: ‘Clue, A New Comedy’ at The Hippodrome Theatre
“Clue” may seem dated in some ways but it is presented as a period piece. Ultimately, it is an evening of old-fashioned, comic mayhem and escapist fun. While the entire cast does an amazing job with the pace and timing, Price (as the butler) and Shartzer (as Mr. Green) steal the show. They are given some of the most physically challenging and hysterical moments in the play, exhibiting the skills of an acrobat. The ending is clever but saying anything more would give too much away. This is a theatrical treat of a murder mystery—short, sweet, and full of laughs.
Theatre Review: ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ at The Hippodrome Theatre
The musical is expertly directed by four-time Tony Award®-winner Jerry Zaks, with music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick and book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. There have a few been updates for a 21st century audience, particularly with references to technology, and some different settings from the film version, but it all blends well.
Theatre Review: ‘The Wiz’ at the Hippodrome Theatre
Despite a half hour delay due to a power outtage, the audience and the whole evening was full of joy and energy, extended applause, and standing ovations. Virginia native and Tik-Tok sensation, Nichelle Lewis was chosen among couple of thousand hopefuls to play Dorothy (she does having touring experience in “Hairspray” among others). She has a beautiful voice and incredible range, though at times, her character felt a little detached.
