Theatre Review: ‘The Wiz’ at the National Theatre
The cast features a talented ensemble of singers, dancers, and actors who bring fresh energy to this classic musical. LaFreniere plays Dorothy with sincerity and an expressive soprano voice. Mingo delivers a charismatic and mysterious title character, and Mitchell performs with spirited physicality and powerful vocals while sporting the most remarkable tail. Lewis and Jerome both deliver strong vocals and an engaging stage presence. Jade doubles as Aunt Em and the wicked Evillene, and Sheherazade appears as Glinda, rounding out the dynamic, principal cast. A lively ensemble supports the production with high‑energy choreography and musicality, contributing to the show’s joyful and immersive atmosphere.
Theatre Review: ‘Stereophonic’ at The National Theatre
“Stereophonic” has a longer running time than most productions, but you will not regret the investment of a few hours seeing this four-act play. The characters will stay with you, and the play’s length adds a sense of spaciousness to the proceedings. If you love theatre, you will not want to miss “Stereophonic,” a modern classic, and with five Tonys, it already inhabits a significant place in theatre history.
Theatre Review: ‘Life of Pi’ at the Kennedy Center
The production is spellbinding. Notable performances include Pi’s Father (Sorab Wadia) who deftly communicates the weariness and concern driving him to protect his family from danger, and the Cook (Ben Durocher) who exudes cruelty and eventually, inhuman savagery. The demanding Mr. Okamoto (Alan Ariano) who is investigating the shipwreck and Lulu Chen (Mi Kang), an empathetic Canadian diplomat maintain a precarious equilibrium as Pi recounts his fantastical tale. Finally, Savidu Geevaratne portrays a curious and enthusiastic Pi whose grace and athleticism interact seamlessly with the magnificent puppeteers breathing life into the zoo animals.
