The North Carolina Symphony and WUNC 91.5FM have partnered to present great music for a summer evening all season long. From now until August 29, favorite Symphony performances will be broadcast every Monday night from 10:00 p.m. to midnight and stream online at wunc.org.
Legendary broadcaster David Hartman hosts a program of music recorded live in Raleigh's Meymandi Concert Hall, as well as interviews and insights into some of the finest compositions ever written.
Tonight's program features Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn and guest pianist Jean-Philippe Collard performing Rachmaninoff's First Piano Concerto alongside two masterworks by Sibelius.
SIBELIUS: Tapiola, Op. 112
RACHMANINOFF: Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op. 1
SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82
Speaking of Sibelius's Tapiola, Llewellyn said before the concert's live performance last October that "it might be his greatest composition, and the Fifth Symphony would be right up there with it. It is Sibelius at his very, very best. And with Piano Concerto No. 1, we have Rachmaninoff at his most elegant and lyrical. So the contrast between the monolithic iron ore of the Sibelius works and Rachmaninoff at his most French is going to be wonderful to explore."
North Carolina Symphony broadcasts on WUNC 91.5FM are supported by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Learn more about tonight's program and upcoming broadcasts at wunc.org/programs/north-carolina-symphony-concert-series.
