CAROUSEL is Now Playing at the National Theatre in Prague
Performances will continue through 5 June 2026.
The National Theatre in Prague has premiered Václav Trojan’s opera Carousel in April. Performances will continue through 5 June 2026.
The production is an opera for children and adults based on a libretto by Marie Charousová-Gardavská. It features English surtitles and is staged at The National Theatre in Prague.
Carousel follows a group of children who are taken on imagined journeys through a carousel ride, encountering settings such as an African rainforest, the Australian Outback, an Indian jungle and the world of American film. The work is characterized by orchestral writing and melodic themes intended to support a fantasy narrative.
The opera was composed by Václav Trojan (1907–1983), who is best known for film music including scores for Jiří Trnka’s animated films and other Czech cinema works. He also wrote the ballets Prince Bayaya and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The production is directed by Magdalena Švecová, with musical direction by Zbyněk Müller. Set and costume design are by Zuzana Přidalová, and lighting design is by Přemysl Janda. The Prague Philharmonic Children’s Choir is participating in the production alongside The National Theatre Chorus, Ballet, and Orchestra.
Carousel was originally completed in the 1960s and premiered in Ostrava in 1960. The 2026 production will be its first staging at The National Theatre.
The opera is performed in Czech with Czech and English surtitles. The running time is approximately two hours with one intermission. It is recommended for audiences aged 5 and older.
