Numa prisão, sob um regime ditatorial, uma cela com dois prisioneiros. Molina, um homossexual com um lado feminino intenso, é colocado pelo diretor da cadeia numa cela com Valentín, um guerrilheiro e preso político, esperando, desta forma, obter informações sobre as atividades revolucionárias.
Apesar das suas diferenças, o universo de fantasia de um e o sofrimento físico do outro acabam por aproximá-los e, contra todas as expectativas, a?? desenvolvem uma cúmplice amizade, que nos dará uma profunda dimensão do que é o Ser Humano.
A famosa obra de Puig teve várias adaptações, um pouco por todo o mundo, incluindo um musical na Broadway. A adaptação ao cinema, em 1985, valeu a William Hurt várias distinções, incluindo o Óscar de Melhor Ator.a??
