Why do a show called Slap That Bitch? After all, it would be much better to call it "The Taming of the Darling Woman?" Or would it?

If you're a woman, do you like the thought that you need to be "tamed?" Most would answer "No." Yet that's exactly what Shakespeare set out to do.

But isn't he a lofty genius who writes about historical figures? Didn't he write in more gentlemanly and courteous times? Surely he can't have meant to demean women by calling them shrews, and of course, he didn't mean that the female gender should be broKen Down like an old gray mare. And yet, I believe he did.

So if Shakespeare chose a provocative, polarizing title, shouldn't Fuse Ensemble Theatre do the same? Shouldn't we question the roles of men and women in today's society and do so as long and as hard as our inspiration did?

Our play, like Shakespeare's is a comedy. A chance for us to explore, through laughter, just how we behave in matters of the heart. And our play, like Shakespeare's pokes fun at how human we all are when it comes to love.

Written by Portland playwright (and Fuse Ensemble Member) Francesca Sanders, Slap That Bitch is a comedy about men, women and the roles we all play.
