By: Aug. 03, 2010

CAN Kicks Off Summer Advocacy with a Series of Flash Performances August 5, 2010 from 7-7:45pm. 7pm Northwest Dance Project at NW 13th and Hoyt and 7:30pm Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers at NW 12th and Couch

Location: NW 13th and NW Hoyt (7pm); NW 12th and NW Couch (7:30pm)

Join the Creative Advocacy Network (CAN) for a special event in the Pearl this Thursday, August 5th. The evening will feature two art performances occurring amidst crowds visiting local galleries and art displays and seek to invigorate CAN's mission and bring the destination of art directly to the people.

The first performance will be with NW Dance Project directed by Sarah Slipper featuring up and coming dancer Andrea Parson who recently received the National Princess Grace Award for young emerging talent. At 7pm dancers at NW 13th and Hoyt will manipulated long, blue ribbons installed with the permission of local building owners and management as a symbol of our underlying connectivity to the arts and vice versa. The second performance at 7:30pm will be by the local drum corps Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers known for their infectious rhythms to open local roller derby bouts and set the pace for many of our parades. They will descend on the intersection of NW 12th and Couch, leaving a chalk image in their wake.

The Flash Choir directed by Sarah Dougher will also be performing at a variety of locations throughout the Pearl that will be determined Thursday afternoon. Dougher has written a piece specifically for CAN that will be performed as a rallying cry for the arts and their mission.

Over the past year, the Creative Advocacy Network has been working hard on researching and compiling information for ways to seek public, annual funding for the arts in the tri-county region. Working together with several partners from Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington County, CAN seeks to gain 15-20 million additional, protected dollars for arts each year.

The First Thursday event will jump start CAN's presence at several up and coming events including: Showtime at Shute, PICA TBA Festival, Beaverton Last Tuesday and many more! For more information on CAN and upcoming events you can go to their website at theartscan.org, on Twitter at theartscan, or on Facebook at Creative Advocacy Network.
