Organic Theater Pittsburgh presents Lucy Thurber's SCARCITY. Originally produced at The Atlantic Theater Company in 2007, SCARCITY is "...a disturbing yet compelling picture of contemporary American life in the lower depths..." - Curtain Up. In the vein of television shows like Roseanne and Showtime's Shameless, SCARCITY "has strong, messy, vibrant characters...[whose] motivations remain pleasurably inscrutable." - The New York Sun. With "an honesty that is pungently compelling" [American Theatre Web], SCARCITY asks its audience, "How far are you willing to go to survive?"

Organic Theater Pittsburgh opens the forum on the theme of scarcity vs. overconsumption in an effort to explore what it means to us in America and to our neighbors around the globe. In its simplest definition, scarcity is the lack of provisions for sustaining life. Organic Theater Pittsburgh takes this opportunity to address the sobering fact that nearly 1 billion people around the world are faced with the scarcity of access to clean drinking water every day. As it is an actor's mission to "imagine him or herself in someone else's shoes," Organic Theater Pittsburgh will partner with Water Step - an organization that empowers volunteers and humanitarian professionals with the ability to assist communities with sustainable water solutions. Water Step accepts donations of new and gently worn shoes to help fund clean drinking water projects around the world. Organic Theater Pittsburgh will offer a $5 discount on the price of admission to those who bring shoes to be donated.

Organic Theater Pittsburgh will also host a Water Walk on Saturday, August 3rd from The University of Pittsburgh to The Monongahela River to collect water in an effort to explore what it feels like for countless people around the world who are forced to travel miles each day to get access to clean drinking water. Talkback sessions following the performances on Sundays will provide a forum for open discussion on the actors' experiences. Talkbacks will be hosted by Environmental Director, Michael R. Young, and will also address how global warming is contributing to the scarcity of access to clean drinking water for countless people around the globe.

Organic Theater Pittsburgh also debuts The Greenhouse Project: A New Play Incubator where local playwrights will pen brand-new works on the theme of scarcity vs. overconsumption. Readings of these new works will debut at The Studio Theatre on August 12 -14 at 7PM each evening and will be followed by a feedback session with the actors and the playwright.
