33 Swoons (working title) is a contemporary take on Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays, “The Bear,” “The Anniversary,” and “The Proposal.” While on their surface, these plays are farces, there are dark and violent desires lurking beneath. Each play is a moment in life stretched to its absolute breaking point. In “The Anniversary,” a banker resorts to violence against his own family in order to keep up appearances at work. In “The Bear,” a man tries to collect a debt and ends up making love to a woman who shot at him with a pistol. “The Proposal” revolves around a young woman who agrees to marry a man she despises to ensure her family’s economic security.
