Teatro Bravo announces a 12th Season for 2011-2012 with Frida Kahlo as the star, followed by a visit from Federico García Lorca, and culminating in a New Works Series of staged readings.

Fernando J. Tesón continues in his second season as Artistic Director of Teatro Bravo, and will kick off the season with Frida Kahlo by Rubén Amavizca-Murúa, followed by Nilo Cruz's Lorca in a Green Dress, and finishing with a New Play Series focusing on works that embody Latino identity and culture.

In September, Teatro Bravo will present the stage adaptation of the life of Frida Kahlo, complete with puppets, an art gallery, and a deeper exploration of the universal struggles of an artist. Based on the life of the acclaimed Mexican artist, this vivid theatrical experience tells the story of the pain and passion of one of the most original women to have ever lived. From her complex relationship with prominent painter Diego Rivera, to her controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative romantic entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary. The play will be directed by Israel Jiménez and is funded in part by the CALA Alliance Festival of the Arts. Teatro Bravo is proud to contribute to the alliance's celebration of Latino arts and artists.

In February of 2012, Teatro Bravo is pleased to present the Arizona premier of Lorca in a Green Dress by Nilo Cruz, an intriguing play covering the areas of life and death, such as what comes next against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. The play takes on added significance with the state of the world in 2011 and the rise of the conservative movement in the United States. The play covers the crossover to death of the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca after his murder by the fascists in 1936.

Finally, Teatro Bravo will exhibit a festival of new play readings in May-June of 2012 (exact dates to be announced). The company may seek to develop these plays into full production during its 2012-13 season. Plays will consist of a variety of topics related to U.S. Latino life and will be submitted by playwrights across the United States and Latin America.
