About the production:
One of the most outstanding-dramas of our time, this fictionalized account has its genesis in the events of the famous 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trail , in which 24 year-old Dayton High School mathematics teacher, sports coach and substitute science instructor, John T. Scopes, was convicted of violating state law by teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in a state-funded school. The play's fictional characters of Matthew Harrison Brady, Henry Drummond, and Bertram Cates correspond to the historical figures of lawyers, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow, and teacher John Scopes. Not necessarily following the actual facts gave the playwrights, and now gives the audience an opportunity
to look at the historical event with new insight. The playwrights have stated that it is not meant to be an actual account, saying "It's not about science versus religion. It's about the right to think," With the play's title taken from the Biblical Book of Proverbs 11:29 "He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind."
