Arizona Broadway Theatre Presents The Sound of Music

By:

Arizona Broadway Theatre welcomes the holiday season with its Mainstage production of The Sound of Music. The popular classic was the final creation of acclaimed musical duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, and will be on stage November 22-December 29. Tickets can be purchased now at azbroadway.org or by calling the ABT box office at (623) 776-8400.

With a long history of philanthropic activity, Dr. Gerrit and Carolee Terpstra announced their charitable donation to ABT for the popular musical to support and encourage growth of healthy arts organizations in the Valley.

"People blossom with the arts, so supporting organizations like ABT is crucial to ensure a thriving future for arts culture," said Mrs. Terpstra, who is an ABT Performing Arts Association, Inc., board member. "We found a theatre that we love and believe in, and we want to nurture the local creative processes."

The Terpstra's $10,000 sponsorship will help cover ABT's licensing costs, salaries for the professional cast, and purchasing set and costume materials. They will also interact with cast, crew and staff to ensure the best possible production. The philanthropic couple divides effort primarily between ABT and Rotary International, in which they have been highly active for many years. Recently returned from a service trip to Guatemala, Dr. and Mrs. Terpstra are eager to share their "favorite musical" with the Valley.

"The secret of life is what you do for others," added Dr. Terpstra. "It is important to recognize there are different ways to give, whether it be in arts, Rotary or education. There are opportunities to do good things in the world around every corner. Discover what you are passionate about and give in any way you can."

The timeless musical will be directed by James Rio and employs a cast 31 professional performers - including a double cast group of young, local performers who will be filling the shoes of the von Trapp family. Valley favorite Trisha Hart Ditsworth (Hairspray, Trailer Park...) returns to the ABT stage as Maria. New York-based performer John Dooley will be joining her as Captain Georg von Trapp.

The production's opening night on November 22 will be full of holiday festivities starting at 5 p.m. A tree lighting and presentation from Toys for Tots will take place before the house opens for dining at 5:30 p.m. All patrons attending ABT through December 22 are encouraged to bring one new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots.

Tickets are on sale now for evening and matinee performances. Prices vary according to date, time and availability. The Sound of Music is a family-friendly production.
